Had to rush Flynn to the vets today, he is a poorly dog Sad

He was the tiniest bit sick last night, more like a cat coughing on a hairball but seemed fine and full of beans. Heard him sound a bit unsettled in the middle of the night but nothing major, this morning his bed and him was covered in diarrhea and an orangey slime (sorry) took him downstairs and he wandered around the garden straining but only able to produce a bloody liquid Sad

So straight over to the vets who gave him an examination, they think it is a gastro issue as other dogs have been in with similar. Have had to leave him in overnight with a drip & medicines. House feels very quiet without him, got to call vets up at 5 for an update and time going v v slowly.

Just praying that it is a bug and he will bounce back quickly.

Hopefully just a really beastly gastro bug, and now that he's getting the drip and medicine he'll be much better soon.

If it is the gastro thing that's been going round here, it's amazing how fast they recover.

It would be lovely to have a [bone] emoticon like Thanks or Wine to send to him!

groovejet · 28/11/2012 16:52

spoke to vets he is still poorly Sad He has had more diarrhea this afternoon and refusing food they have been offered, he is on drips and I won't hear any more until about 10am tomorrow unless he worsens.

Wish I could go to the vets and give him some fuss.

Oh no, I'll be thinking of you... .

groovejet · 28/11/2012 17:05

thanks, really not having the best of days, dh has been working away and had to go pick up dd1 from school at lunch as she had hurt herself in the playground may have to see if DH has any beer left, think I deserve one.

ImperialStateKnickers · 28/11/2012 17:07

I think you deserve a beer too Grin. How's dd1 now?

safflower · 28/11/2012 17:12

Oh poor pup? How old is he, and what breed?

groovejet · 28/11/2012 17:20

dd1 is fine apart from a swollen lip and a sore ear, she fell over and her tooth cut the inside of her lip quite badly.

Flynn is 9 months and a King Charles Cavalier, he is usually my shadow so very strange not to have him following me about the house or trying to get on my lap.

ImperialStateKnickers · 28/11/2012 17:36

Ouch for dd1!

Poor Flynn. I always think gastro bugs hit little dogs harder, especially when they're young, there's so little of them so the diarrhoea empties them of fluid really quickly.

Has he had any sort of scan to see if there's anything amiss internally - something blocking his gut?

I am NOT in any way veterinary trained btw.

groovejet · 28/11/2012 17:42

No scans yet, they seem fairly convinced it is gastro from examining him and due to other dogs having the same symptoms. Will guess if there is no improvement at all tomorrow that they may want to investigate further. The fact that there have been other dogs ill does offer me reassurance that it is nothing more serious.

The vet did say that although some dogs do bounce back quickly some need a couple of nights in, am guessing perhaps as you say the smaller ones can struggle more.

Will you update us when you speak to vets in the morning?

I really must step away from the computer and feed my poor dds now...

groovejet · 28/11/2012 17:48

Will do, thanks for listening, been hard with dh away and only other dog lovers can understand the worry when they are poorly.

No messages from the vets overnight so Flynn hasn't got worse overnight just got to wait a couple more hours to see what is happening.

Hoping he has had a very fast recovery so I can have him home, mornings are not the same without a wiggling excited pup giving me my morning wake up call.

SpicyPear · 29/11/2012 08:35

Fingers crossed for you that he can come home today [hugs]

ChickensHaveNoEyebrows · 29/11/2012 10:01

Hope Flynn is on the mend x

GoldenOrangeWhippoorwhill · 29/11/2012 10:41

Hope he's getting better poor pup. It's scary when they are sick like that.

There seems to be a nasty bug going round. My old dog got what I think is the same thing a few weeks back, just before we got the new puppy. Bit sick then bloody diarrhoea and gingery orange mucus. She was very poorly and we weren't sure if she was going to make it. She's 12 and a very old lady with heart problems and cancer but she pulled through and is fine now.

groovejet · 29/11/2012 10:42

Have spoken to the vets he is improving Grin no more blood and he has eaten a small bit. He is still a bit lethargic, although he does tend to pine a bit anyway when I am at work on Saturday so may not just be due to illness.

Got to call back later today to speak to original vet and see how he has been and I might be able to have him back. Even if he needs another night at least he is on the mend.

He is home, a bit subdued and off his food, to be expected really. He is on 3 lots of medicine, prescription food and has to have a check up on monday.

Just thankful he is on the mend, could have been a very different outcome for him, had a google to help fill out his insurance forms and pleased I didn't google before scary stuff.

Whippoorwhill · 30/11/2012 13:20

Yay! Glad he's home and feeling a bit better.
