Our lovely dog is in a critical condition

After surgery today.

She'd lost her appetite and was excessively thirsty. The vet examined her abdomen and performed an ultrasound and detected an abnormality on Tuesday and we had to take her back today for further investigations.

They found a tumour in her spleen, the size of a grapefruit. She was very lucky that her spleen hasn't hemmoraged. They took her to theatre and removed the tumour and her spleen. The human eye didn't spot any further abnormalities- not sure whether this means there's a chance it isn't malignant.

She's lost a lot of blood and is still sedated and lying on a heat mat. She's 13 and they are worried she will go into shock.

I'm feeling so terribly sad and worried. They said she was very anxious and pale when left, and I'd hate her to think we'd left her there.

The vet said he'd never treated such a lovely natured dog .

Anyone have any experience or know what we can expect next? They'll call overnight if she passes, otherwise we have to call at 10am.

Can only hope for a quiet and restful night for her and better news in the morning.

It sounds like they are well on top of things, and that it's the blood loss that's concerning them due to the spleen being removed.

Dogs have an amazing ability to go from well - unwell and back again in a very short space of time. Hopefully your lovely doggle will rest well tonight and come through OK. Waiting is horrible but she's in the best hands.

She's a mixed breed.

We found her in a bag when she was four weeks old. She had such a tough start.

Hope she's home tomorrow.

She was, but luckily we had our gorgeous black lab (rip) to tire her out.
Amazingly, she mothered her and a phantom pregnancy coincided with us bringing the pup home, meaning she was able to feed her.
I'm feeling more positive after a glass of wine, but am worried about getting my hopes up. DD (7) has gone to bed distraught.

soooooo sorry to read this PM ...... empathise truly as we had kinda similar situation a while back with our collie x spaniel ( also a rescue as an ickle pup) when she developed pancreatitis.

She was also very, very sick.

If there is a vet nurse at the surgery late or overnight then surely you could phone ... or did they actually say you couldn't ?

Am in bed but unable to sleep. They said the first twelve hours would be critical, and we're through five. Hope that's a good sign.

oh, bless you, its such a worry isn't it. Dogs do tend to be very very flat after a splenectomy but they do pick up after the first day or so. So even though she sounds very poorly, i don't think it sounds like she is unusually poorly (if that makes any sense), it is a massive adjustment for her body to make but make it she will and hopefully be home with you in a matter of days. I used to be a vet nurse and we did a fair few splenectomies and they were always properly poorly afterwards, but 99% of them pulled through. Its encouraging news that the spleen hadn't ruptured as that is when you are really struggling. Fingers crossed for you xx

This is a fairly common procedure in old dogs. My friends dog has it done at 13 and lived for 2 more years :) fingers crossed for your girly. No news is good news.

Would you be able to call though? Our practice has the phones switched over to the emergency vets after closing time. Try to get some sleep x x

They said to try not to call, because they were busy overnight and would call of there was any change.
