Our lovely dog is in a critical condition

After surgery today.

She'd lost her appetite and was excessively thirsty. The vet examined her abdomen and performed an ultrasound and detected an abnormality on Tuesday and we had to take her back today for further investigations.

They found a tumour in her spleen, the size of a grapefruit. She was very lucky that her spleen hasn't hemmoraged. They took her to theatre and removed the tumour and her spleen. The human eye didn't spot any further abnormalities- not sure whether this means there's a chance it isn't malignant.

She's lost a lot of blood and is still sedated and lying on a heat mat. She's 13 and they are worried she will go into shock.

I'm feeling so terribly sad and worried. They said she was very anxious and pale when left, and I'd hate her to think we'd left her there. Sad

The vet said he'd never treated such a lovely natured dog .

Anyone have any experience or know what we can expect next? They'll call overnight if she passes, otherwise we have to call at 10am.

Thinking on it, i don't think i would be inclined to visit actually, its nice for you to see her, but she will think you are taking her home and wont like it when you have to leave her. They will have her home to you by tomorrow is my bet xx

Oh she sounds lovely :) Collie x Spaniel - lovely!! She's a good age & she's had a lovely life with you, she was a lucky pup to be rescued like that!! You have to remember that, no matter what.

I really hope she makes a good recovery - I'll keep my paws fingers crossed x

I agree that visiting her probably isn't the best idea, even though I know exactly how much you want to and how very hard it will be not to. I just think that her getting all excited to see you, then upset again when you go, probably isn't conducive to a peaceful recovery :( x

I've been thinking the same thing. We'll have updates at 12 and 5.

Any more news yet?
Hope she's coming round.

One of mine had this op, a good few years ago now when things weren't as advanced. She had a cancerous tumour on her spleen. The vet who operated said he had never seen such a huge tumour in such a little dog, she was a Cairn. He had put it on one side to show me & it was massive. We were both amazed that she hadn 't shown any symptoms till the week before when she'd begun to shake, obviously in pain & stopped eating & I'd taken her to see him. He ran tests & operated as soon as he got the results.
When I went to collect her, I cried when he brought her out from the back, wagging her tail. She always was the bravest, most stoic little dog.
She lived very happily for another year.

She's coming home!

They said her recovery will be better in her own environment. I think she's anxious being locked up, but she's had some water, a little food and has been out for a wee.

They'll give more info later.

WOOOHOOO!! GrinGrinGrin

Aquelven - Another positive story. Were there any complications after surgery, or any secondary cancers found?

She's going to be spoilt rotten

Oh, that is good news, brilliant!!
She will be much happier at home & can start to get well with you taking care of her, where she's loved. It does make a difference.

No, Pickle, she didn't have any complications. It took her a few weeks to get back to normal as she was weak & sore, so plenty of rest & tempting her with things she liked to eat. But she was back to normal in about three weeks. She didn't have any more cancers but she died of heart failure a year later.

I'm so glad your girl is coming home & on the mend. Smile

She's home. Not springy, but that's expected. She's quite sad, poor thing.

The tumour was cancerous, and there's nothing to say it won't grow back. No chemo required, no anti bs or painkillers. Back to the vet on Monday evening and a dry diet until then. They said not to treat her any differently (as if!!)

You've all been bloody brilliant, thank you!

They have removed her whole spleen, which means that they will have taken out ALL the tumour, so even if it is cancerous so long as it hasn't already spread (unlikely, but not impossible of course) then the likelihood of it returning is pretty minimal. It is when they only remove the lumps that there is more risk of regrowth, if i were you i would put it out of your mind, get her well and back to normal. :)
