Our lovely dog is in a critical condition

After surgery today.

She'd lost her appetite and was excessively thirsty. The vet examined her abdomen and performed an ultrasound and detected an abnormality on Tuesday and we had to take her back today for further investigations.

They found a tumour in her spleen, the size of a grapefruit. She was very lucky that her spleen hasn't hemmoraged. They took her to theatre and removed the tumour and her spleen. The human eye didn't spot any further abnormalities- not sure whether this means there's a chance it isn't malignant.

She's lost a lot of blood and is still sedated and lying on a heat mat. She's 13 and they are worried she will go into shock.

I'm feeling so terribly sad and worried. They said she was very anxious and pale when left, and I'd hate her to think we'd left her there. Sad

The vet said he'd never treated such a lovely natured dog .

Anyone have any experience or know what we can expect next? They'll call overnight if she passes, otherwise we have to call at 10am.

You know what, call them, they wont mind, they don't want people phoning every five minutes but they will have time to pick up the phone and give you a quick update. No news IS good news, but it would be nice to have tha confirmed and then you can go to sleep.

Not yet. Trying not to call until the vet has seen her (they said by 10) to get a full update. She must have made it through the night, or they promised they'd call. They said the first twelve hours were critical, and she's been out of theatre 15 hours.
Will we be allowed to visit her? What can we expect to see? Would it be wise not to take DD?

Pickled, we would always allow a visit, how old is your DD? She probably wont be up and out of her kennel so i'd be inclined to leave DD at home if she is very young.

Not long to wait now. I would ask the vet's advice about whether to take your DD. Wishing your lovely dog all the best for a quick recovery and return home.

She's 7. Only 25 mins to wait. Tried to call earlier but gave an automated emergency message.

Only managed to get through to receptionist. She's awake and has been wagging her tail. Not eating or drinking yet, and her temperature is very high. Wound looks the same as yesterday. They said we could go down but will be waiting a long time to see her because of obs that need to be done. She'll be assessed again at midday, and they will call us then.
Really hope she's out of the woods. Hopefully they can bring her temp down

Best of luck. No news is good news - honestly. They'll have checked her over, and if she was going downhill than you'd be first on the list to call.

Ask the vet about your daughter. At 7 she should be old enough, but if your dog gets excited when she sees your daughter, it's probably not a good idea. You don't want to overwhelm her if she's still feeling delicate.

If she's completely fine this morning, she'll probably love seeing your daughter.

Our 16 year old dog had her spleen removed after cancerous tumours were found. She was on deaths door for hours. We had four calls to rush in because she wouldn't make it through the hour. Four days later she was as right as rain - she escaped from her cage while she was being fed and bounded round the reception area, positively hyper from the cage rest. She was so happy, and she was pretty healthy after that.

Fingers tightly crossed x

Thanks for all your thoughts.

I did wonder if they were trying to delay us seeing her because of her active nature. A few more hours lying down would benefit her. Mum wanted to buy her a new bed this morning, but my superstitious father wants her to wait until she's coming home.
I suspect they'll keep her in again tonight.
That's such a positive story, caja. When did you find out if the tumours were cancerous? Were any secondaries found? Was your dog less active after the op?

She made it through the night.
