What sort of insurance?

We are due to pick up our doggy on Sunday and have been looking at diff insurances. It's totally confusing! Why do some say max benefit or lifetime cover??
Also not too sure what is most important- low excess, 1000 limit or higher.
As far as I'm aware, there's no illness at the mo. but what is it best to be covered for?

I think it depends what matters to you.

Just be aware that some cheaper ones only pay out for 12 months from the first onset of an illmess. So if they insure upto £4000 say per condition they will pay up to £4000 for a maximum of a year. The next level will pay out £4000 per condition maximum but that will last for the dogs lifetime. More unusual but you can get the odd one where the £4000 (or whatever limit you chose) is replenished each year, which Kennel club do I believe. A higher excess means a lower premium generally but that again is a personal choice.

We've gone for the middle level of cover (with Tesco extra).

I've got an uninsured cat with expensive ongoing treatment which cost around £1000 just to be diagnosed (ultrasound and some other tests) so I've kept that in mind when insuring the younger cat and my puppy, it's not the normal accidents and illnesses that bother me, but that tests for some things even before you decide whether to treat or not would use up small limits.

I can always find money for taking them down for a stomach upset or a small injury, but I couldn't afford another referral to a specialist or the diagnostic tests, never mind ongoing medication.
