that's it reallly. Two of my friends swear blind that the chocs are a bit thick and that blacks are the cleverest, can that be true?

No truth it's a myth it all depends upon the individual dog, given the option I would choose Black everytime but I'm biased.Labs are a wonderful breed of dog whatever colour you choose.

Blacks are obviously the best. I may be biased.

I walk several of each. They're all lovely, the brightest is probably a yellow bitch, second brightest is a black dog, the thickest is a chocolate dog, but it's hard to tell, he may improve after his op., he spends most of his time at the moment trying to hump anything that might conceivably be a girl, eg the wrong end of one of the black ones, his bed, a footstool..., and like many male creatures clearly his brain has migrated to his trousers.

I dont think that assumption is true.
I have a black. He's a bit thick and hyperactive and very headstrong. But he is a darling and I wouldn't change him for the world.
I would say however choose your pup carefully.

We have a brown lab, and she is definitely a bit dim! And someone once pointed out to me that you never see a brown lab guide dog, which, if true, MIT say something about their intelligennce, or lack thereof.

But ddog1 is a gorgeous, loveable, cuddly teddy bear of a dog, and that far outweighs her dimness. There are pics of her gorgeousness on my profile.

Another Lab fan here, they are wonderful dogs. We had a chocolate bitch as our first dog when we got married, such a softy. When she was about 6 she was diagnosed with Addison's, a condition affecting the production of adrenaline (fight or flight hormone), this made her very laid back and easy going, could be interpreted as a bit dense. We lost her aged nearly 8, a very dark day. A year later we got a black bitch after much checking up pedigrees, hip/eye scores and she is VERY clever dog, descended from field trial champion stock. Handy for always finding squeeky ball ! Sorry about the ramble, in answer to your post, I think there are clever and not so clever all colours, I know a black boy whose nice but dim and a very smart and sneaky yellow boy (my girl's boyfriend). Check on breeding and pedigree as far as you can, colour not as important IMHO.

Not sure about intelligence but I did hear that chocolate labs are the most accident prone! I have a black lab and he is very clever when it suits him.

I have two black labs. Colour not by choice but by chance (both rescues - we'd have any dog as long as it was a lab) both very different in character.

The first is highly intelligent and can virtually read my thoughts. The second you can see the chocolate coming through the coat in the sun and she has rounder eyes with the choc type hairless ring around the eye IYKWIM. Shes stubborn and a bit thick

We used to have a highly intelligent golden lad and he was wonderfully gentle with the kids.

It'd be funny if yellow labs and black ones were at opposite ends of the intelligence scale, because I know a yellow and black one! His front left quarter is black with yellow splotches, front right quarter is yellow with black splotches, his back left quarter is the same as front right, and his back right is the same as front left.

I wonder what his intelligence level would be if blacks were stupid and yellows were smart :o

Does it depend on whether the lab is from show or working stock? You would think the working dogs are cleverer than the show ones - or is this too much of a generalisation?

Once upon a time there was a little bit of truth to this. The gene pool for chocolate labs was much narrower. Many of them came out of lines not, uh, renowned for attention span, let's just say. Breeders used to refer to 'brown brains'.

These days? Well the gene pool is much, much broader and more diverse. So color is no longer indicative of brains. It's just a bit of breeder lore that people still hang onto even though it's outdated.

yesbut mine is working lines. Still as dopey as two short planks. love my boy; cant retrieve for toffee, happily chases his tail, barks at his own reflection, but can stiff out a muddle puddle in a desert.

IMO, FWIW-
Black labs- cheekiest. Clever lads.
Brown labs- more laid back and less smarts.
Don't know that much about yellow labs.

Those that say they've never heard of a choccie guide dog have obv never read "Emma" by Sheila Hocken. (It was big in the '80's so this may be a generational thing).

Was just about to mention "Emma" Magratgarlik Have actually read that fairly recently for a childhood flashback. That book developed a clear preference that if I was ever to have a lab I would choose ideally a chocolate lab.

i read Emma and me!, it was a great book! I rememberbit now. Oh how I cried at the end
