Sooo, we recently started the search for dog no. 2 and had a call this week from one of the rescues about a pup from an accidental litter. He gets on with SpicyDog like a house on fire and has a lovely little temperament so we are going ahead. However, we haven't had a pup before, only adult dogs. I've already booked puppy classes for next month but also need to read up and get a good routine sorted.

Wondered if the good people of the Doghouse could advise on a clear and concise reward based/positive puppy book that will get us going in the right direction in the couple of days before SpicyDog2 comes home?! Thanks.

Idiot's Guide to Positive Dog Training by Pamela Dennison. Brilliant book, everything you need :)

Gwen Bailey's 'The perfect puppy' is good.

Total Recall by Pippa Mattinson is good. The emphasis is on getting your dog to come back to you but also also explains how dogs learn, how to use treats and rewards etc.
Specific advice on starting recall training from scratch with puppies, as well as older dogs who've developed bad habits. The About Turn walk completely sorted my labs habit of walking a long way in front of me when off lead.

I've got Bailey perfect puppy book, it's ok...but, I already knew most of it as I'm not a novice dog owner, just never had one from tiny before.

And, there's no chapter on - You're already doing all this but your puppy is a tiny hooligan...lol

Thanks all. I've bought Bailey as have trained my adult dog from scratch and just needed the puppy specific bits.

You post made me fell better tabulah! He came home on Friday and we've nicknamed him the pterodactyl...
