Oh the Shame!

I have posted on here about our daft dog and her lead reactivity with other dogs. Tried all the usual things distractions, changing direction etc. Sometimes works usually doesnt. Saw a behaviourist who said its a combination of fear ( shes been bitten twice on lead) and frustration wants to get to other dog. Off lead brilliant, quite deferent to other dogs and just wants a game of chase (hmm)

This morning she has had a major allergic reaction to something face and eyes swollen, one eye almost closed. Took her to local vet, chatting about this and that explained the above. Go back into reception, in walks a lurcher, we go nuclear, I am using all my weight to hold her, other dog doest react at all, lovely receptionist puts bill and change into my purse while I try and wrestle her into submission. Eventualy other owner is asked to pop back outside so I can get her out (blush). I think its going to have to be a canny collar unless someone knowledgeable here can offer some advice regarding this, I did think of a slip lead, but havent used one before. Any advice would be appreciated. TIA

Hello DOoinMeCleanin, is that behaviour alteration therapy? not sure how to apply it in her case, how would you approach this behaviour with BAT?

Please explain what you meant by 'wrestle her into submission', I'm hoping it doesn't mean what I think it does.
Yy to BAT, haven't tried itmyself but have heard good things about it from other dog owners.

You need Cuebill really but I will try and explain it.

Basically what you would need to is watch her very closely while you are walking along. Just before (there should be subtle signs that she is starting to feel uncomfortable i.e sniffing the ground, looking away, yawning, lip licking and loads of others, if you pay enough attention you should be able to spot her signals soon enough) she's going to start kicking off you would turn around and then treat her, so she is being treat for displaying calm behaviour. It might be that you need to instant she spots another dog, don't give up, eventually you will be able to get closer.

Thanks, Maybe I have been leaving it a little late, as I say sometimes the treats work, othertimes not. She has however one particular favourite which I will see if it comes in smaller bite size bits, that just MIGHT be enough of an incentive. luckily most of the other dog owners know that she means no harm and usually laugh at her, but she is just a softy at heart which makes it so much harder. she is always on the lookout if you see what I mean, ie when we approach a corner she will try to walk wide so she gets an advance view of the road ahead. With the darker mornings she is more alert as well. At the moment she is very sorry for herself but hopefully the pills will kick in and reduce the swelling.

Oddly, as an aside its a purely visual thing, she has to see the dog, dogs barking have no effect, we have two very vocal terriers next door and she absolutely ignores them when they are going ape when she is in the garden
