Anyone know about these big dog pounds in Wales?

Just rehomed a one year old dog from a little rescue home in Kent, smashing dog who has settled well this week.

The rescue home said they got him in from a big pound in wales, where they collect a lot of dogs from every couple of weeks and then try and rehome them locally.

Just wondering if anyone knows about these type of places or where this might be? I am trying to work out what might have happened to him before he came to be with me (although I probably will never know).

Yes it was the sadly named but excellent last chance. Where does the welsh pound get them, do they have a big problem with puppy farming in Wales? Presumably these places are some sort of central repository for the UK?

Not sure but they have a couple of dogs that have been there for over a year :(

My new boy is so well behaved and well socialised it is hard to think he was a stray or unwanted. My previous rescue was poorly socialised, clingy and a total scavenger (but lovely) so completely believable that she was abandoned.

Wow, just googled it :( Shocking that your SIL could get a dog like that, I didnt actually know that sort of thing still happened. Looks as if they are trying to pass legislation in Wales. The sooner all dogs are microchipped the better. Sounds like my guy had a lucky escape.

Looks like there's a bit of confusion over the use of the word "pounds". All Welsh Councils, like English ones, have to make provision for stray and lost dogs - they must be legally held for 7 days to allow for their owners to reclaim them before they can be disposed of - either by donation to charity or by being killed. Some Welsh Councils e.g. Cardiff and Newport run their own pounds/dogs home - whereas others have outsourced the actual kennel facilities. So for instance Bridgend and Vale of Glamorgan Council share the facilities that are provided by Croft Kennels link here. You can find out more details about the numbers of stray dogs in Wales and details about how each Council deals with them here - there is a lot of detail about things like Council budgets, policies on scanning etc.

There has been an improvement recently in the way that pounds and local charities are working together. For instance, the wonderful Hope Rescue now has a commitment to find homes for all pound dogs from two of the S Wales Councils meaning that there is no need to for them to be killed simply to free space. This sort of strategic partnering is a fantastic idea and is the way to go. They are also leading the campaign against BSL in Wales and it's likely the Welsh Govt will look at this in 2013 (possibly before England!).

Puppy farm bitches rarely enter the stray dog population. They are either killed on farm or a few are sent to disposal points at Many Tears. Last Chance Rescue is connected to MT as it was set up by the same person before they moved to Wales. Although MT takes some pound dogs from Carmarthenshire, this is not the main source of their dogs - they are predominantly pf bitches/studs. MT is the biggest dog rehoming organisation in Wales and is one of the biggest in the UK - they process over a thousand dogs a year, way more than any local authority or individual charity branch.

So sad to think that my new doggie might have been put down, and that now he is in Kent this wet sunday afternoon sat on a sofa by a fire after a long walk :)

Thanks for posting this. I have also been wondering why so many dogs from Wales were ending up in rescues.

Puppy farms and puppy farm conveyor belts are not just in Wales. Money making puppy farmers are everywhere. Don't forget the BackYardBreeders. They get away with it because they can. Because people are stupid enough to ignore what really goes on. The cruelty and suffering is Out of sight therfore out of mind.

charlearose your sil pooch was lucky but what about his poor mum used as a breeding machine and disposed of when she can no longer produce and what about your sil pooch's siblings? Any of them girls? The next breeding machine to continue the vicious cycle. Too many people like your sil ignore all the advice and are quite prepared to turn a blind eye. Makes me so mad!

Leaflets can be obtained from Puppy Love if you want to help spread the word and help educate people about puppy farming. Too many people are still buying sick pups. The suffering needs to stop.

I have 2 dogs, both came from Last Chance and both came from Wales.

They are wonderful dogs, the first one Lottie, clearly had good training and is well behaved, I would love to know her background as someone must be missing her. Having said that I would never part with her now, (2 years on).

Is the policy in Wales to put dogs to sleep that are not claimed?

I can never get over how many dogs need good homes. I would always go to rescue centres for animals. I have had 1 cat, 1 horse and 2 dogs all rescue animals and all fantasic.
