Getting a puppy

Hi, my mum had to have her lovely golden cocker put down during the week, she was 15 and was very frail, deaf and going blind.

She's talking about getting another puppy (which we are pleased about). But I'm not sure how we go about making sure we get one from a good home etc. How old should they be before we can take them from their mum, do we get KC registered.

Any advice appreciated.

Has your mum considered a rescue puppy? The rescue centres are really helpful giving loads and loads of advice about adopting puppies. They have too many puppies needing homes. Have a look at Paul O'Grady's show at 8pm on ITV1 tonight - it's set at Battersea Dogs Home and gives you a real insight into the rescue and adoption world.

I would also have a look at rescues - I don't know your mum's age or state of health but do you think your mum is up for looking after a very energetic puppy, who will need to learn all the basics of housetraining, lead walking etc etc. What about a slightly older dog who has those basics in place? Many, many different types of dogs available at rescues. Just take a quick look at www.manytears.co.uk to see what's out there.
