My dog died

I couldn't think of a decent thread title.

We had a gorgeous 6 year old Cavalier, and I've posted before that he's not been well with a serious heart condition at a very young age.

Well, he'd responded really well to treatment so although the vet told us in December that he probably had months rather than years, we were hopeful to keep him a while longer.

He'd been not quite himself for a couple of days, although still perky and waggy this morning when we came downstairs.

We popped out for breakfast and when we came back he had found himself a little nook like he does when he's scared :( and was lying there, no heart beat, nothing.

DH whipped him into the car and round to the vets, but there was nothing they could have done. Massive organ failure apparently.

I keep looking round for him. :(

Oh I'm so sorry. I have lost a dog very young and I know how awful it is.

So sorry to hear this, my little dog passed away in similar circumstances a few weeks ago and it was heartbreaking.

Even now I look for him when I come home.

Take your time to mourn him and do something to remember him when you're ready. my boy is buried in the garden and I often have a little chat to him when I'm out there (possibly the neighbours are a bit confused by this!)

We're having him cremated. I was able to go to the vets and say goodbye to him, which although I wasn't sure about at the time, I'm glad I did.

It's just not right. Although he wasn't well, you'd never know it to have looked at him. :(

I'm so sorry. We had our 13 year old westie PTS in March and I miss her more now than I did immediately afterwards. At least his death must have been sudden and he didn't suffer.

So very sorry. We also lost a six year old in similar circumstances last year. Whilst the memories are still fresh write down all the things you remember about him - you'll look at the list in years to come when maybe you'd forgotten about funny things he did. You will feel better in time but the first few weeks are just hellish. RIP - you were obviously a much loved dog. x

The vet said it would have been painless so that was something. I have a big hurt in my chest. Keep expecting him to come running in. I left the back door open for him this morning. :(

So sorry to hear of your loss. Our dog died in June and I still half expect him to be around when I get home - and shut the side gate to stop him wandering off.

am so sorry. We lost our dog about a month ago . Although he was put down due to leukaemia, it was sudden, 4 weeks from diagnosis to death.

The best sympathy card we got was, 'sorry you lost a family member...'

The pain in your chest will fade in time....

Writing down memories is a brilliant idea. One of my DDs favourite things is for me to tell her stories about the escapades my childhood dog got up to.

I found it helpful to plant something in my garden to think of my loved animal companion . We need rituals that soothe I think . Our dogs love the outdoors and it seems nice to plant a small tree or shrub in their memory.
Also planted some daffodil and snowdrop bulbs on her favourite walk in the undergrowth ........I see them every year and it helps . Celebrate his life and know he was so well loved Flowery .

We stayed out all day today but had to come home eventually, and no waggy tail running up to greet us :(

I agree writing down memories is a good idea. There are so many funny things he used do to.
He used to sneeze to get attention when he knew he wasn't supposed to bark.
He used to bark at DH when he kissed me in a 'Hands Off My Mummy' way. He used to stick his bum in the air and shove as much of his face under the gate as he possible could when we went out the back gate.
He used to try and climb in the dishwasher to do a pre wash after something meaty had been had for dinner.
He used to pretend to stay downstairs then when I was out of sight follow me up to the office and lay by my feet while I was working, knowing I wouldn't have the heart to send him back down.
He used to bark at the church bells even though we've lived within earshot of the church his entire life.

So many things.

so sorry flowery I bet your little dcs will miss him too . I'm very glad he went quickly and painlessly .
