Very poorly springer.

Our very elderly springer has been a bit off her food since Monday and then on Wednesday she perked up and started eating again. Yesterday she suddenly went down hill again, not even eating chicken now and struggling to get to her feet, panting and looking very unhappy.
Off to our vets as soon as they open tomorrow but it's not looking good. We will not let her suffer as she's 14 in a couple of weeks time.

If she's that poorly could you phone your normal vets now, even if there closed they should have an out of hours service you can just phone for a advice or offer and out of hours team that you could also call

We've spoken to the advice line and they said to keep her comfortable, they said to bring her in to the emergency vets if she starts to try to vomit but can't or she stops drinking , she doesn't seem to be in pain atm. TBH it's a long drive to the emergency vets and I think she would be so distressed I would rather wait until tomorrow if at all possible but will be staying with her.
If she has to die (I know at her age it is very possible) I want it to be as stress free as possible for her.

Awww I'm sorry Life sounds like it might be time she's had a good long life and has obviously been loved. Lots of attention for her tonight and I agree with you don't drag her to the emergency vets if you don't feel its completely necessary but keep an eye on her for not drinking as this is what happened with my MIL's Lab and it turned out her organs were shutting down. and for you and love and attention for your old girl.

Thanks Queen. Yes it is the one thing we can do for our animals, she is much loved, DD is coming home from uni today so she can say goodbye if that is what it is. DS is being brave at his uni as it is too far to come home.
She doesn't seem to want attention though which worries me as she has always been up for a cuddle, I think dogs sometimes want to be left in peace when the end comes and we have to respect what she wants even if it is so hard not to hold her. Such a sad home tonight but we are still hoping although not much IYKWIM.

How is she today? Fingers crossed she has perked up again.

Not much change, we took her to emergency vets as we thought she was in pain and they gave her an antibiotic injection as she had a high temp and that seemed to make her more comfortable, went to our own vet yesterday and they took bloods, should get results this afternoon.
The vet is not very hopeful due to her age and rapid weight loss but we can but wait and see.
She's still miserable and has only had a few pieces of chicken breast.

Just got the blood test results, it appears she has kidney failure, will take her in tomorrow for a urine test and then we will discuss where to go from there. The vet is lovely and agrees with my opinion that to keep her going if we can not restore some of her enjoyment of life is cruel.
She is a dog who lives for food, affection and walks, none of which she wants atm.
