Rabies Vaccine - Important, please read!

We're planning to take DDog on his holidays quite soon, so have been having his vaccines/pet passport organised.

The law around rabies vaccinations has recently changed, and it is no longer a legal requirement to have a blood test post vaccination to check that the vaccine has worked.

Being the paranoid cautious type, I insisted that the vet do a blood test to check that it had been successful, to my shock, it hadn't worked!

Just wanted to make you all aware that the vaccine quite clearly isn't successful in 100% of cases; legally DDog could have traveled to Europe but he would have been completely unprotected Shock

If you are having rabies vaccinations done, please have the blood test to make sure your dog is protected, I'm so pleased that we did.

I'm actually really cross that pressure from the EU means that we have scrapped the requirement to have this blood test done. Can't help but think it won't be long before rabies rears its ugly head in the UK Sad

Anyway, just wanted to share this rather worrying piece of news.

And this is why vets were against the scrapping of this requirement.
The rabies vaccination works well but no vaccination is 100% effective.
It is generally accepted in the veterinary world that these changes to the Pet Passport laws are very likely allow rabies back into the UK.

our vet insists on the blood test afterwards or they wont give the vaccine for exactly this reason.

CakeMeIAmYours · 18/09/2012 18:19

Its good to know that Pimms - I hope there are more vets out there that insist on it.

It wasn't an inexpensive exercise though (an additional £85 on top of the costs for CanL and tick treatments etc) I really worry that dog owners will think that because it isn't a legal requirement, it isn't necessary.

We always give a double dose course of the vaccine we never had a failure on the blood test and working quaratine I have done literally thousands of passports. If an owner insists on a single vaccine we advise them of the risks.

Oh yes we found brand of vaccine is also really important.
