puppy toileting age

I have a 17wk old pom pup who still isnt house trained, was just wondering if it too early still or should be clean in the house by now?

when i get up in the morning theres poo and wee (dont use pads, goes out before i go to bed, water taken away few hrs before bed...)

I do praise when she does it outside and ignore when she has an accident - i say accident but she will come in from a walk and pee straight on the floor when i get in! she has recently been going upstairs and pooing, even when the back door is open

she should be confined to the living room but kids leave the stairgate open - she has a chance to bolt upstairs and do the deed!

so am i expecting too much or should i be doing something about it? she also messes when i go out, she has a kong, toys everything to keep her occupied.

We have an 8-month old pup and he was house trained by about 4 months but I think it depends what your expectations are! He was in a crate overnight (still is) and was confined to downstairs. I read that they don't like messing in their crates, not sure how true that is but it seemed to work for us. He was taken out last thing at night and used to wake us up VERY early in those days (5.45!!) so the night time period wasn't huge. I guess if you go to bed early and like a lie in it might be different. I used to take him outside, on a lead about once an hour to wee during the day. He soon learned that when he was on the lead in the garden he was expected to wee, and when he was off lead that was playtime. He had been paper trained by the breeder so I used to leave a puppy pad by the back door and if I wasn't quick enough to take him outside, he was pretty good at using the pad. I'm not an expert but I hope this helps, I'm sure other more knowledgeable people will be along soon.

I don't recommend lifting the water up at night. Dogs should always have access to water.

I think she is still quite young to be fully trained yet. Keep putting her outside every 2 hours in the day if poss. And do the last toilet as late as you can, followed by as early as you can in the morning. She will get there!

My 10 week old puppy is pretty good too. Goes to the French windows when he wants to go out if we're to stupid to realise what he's so obviously trying to tell us he will them pee after about 10 mins of waiting. He too goes to bed about 11 30 and we take him out at 5 30 and he's been dry the last five nights. We too have him in a crate mainly at night, in the day as soon as he wakes up or we feed him or stop playing with him we put out him out or he goes out on his own.
I think a lot is dependent on the breed of dog we've had other dogs and always done the same thing some pick it up instantly others are still having accidents at 8-9 months.

I bought a crate and she just wouldnt stay in it, howled, cried, yelped! was getting no sleep, tried a kong and treats in there with her but just went mad!

she is confined to downstairs unless the DC'S forget to shut the gate on the living room door! i go to bed late and put her out before and i get up early having a 2yo aint got a choice lol

she dont sleep through the night i can hear her messing around!

i had to remove the pads as she thought she could pee on my door mats, daily (unread) newsaper and DC's drawings (if they leave paper on the floor)

she dont wait 10mins, she walks to the back door and squats! i still put her out tho to finish then praise her.

she was in the kitchen but barked through out the night so i tried the living room and she was quiet - recently started to bark tho? i come down to see if she's ok, put her out for a wee but still wake up to accidents.

I'm probably stating the obvious, but have you tried making the crate really cosy, leaving door open during the day and encouraging her to use it as a den during the day? I've read on here people putting treats in there randomly during the day so their pups nip in to get them. We have a blanket over the top of ours so it's quite dark and cosy, also have blinds down at night etc so no distractions. He chooses to sleep in their during the daytime now as well as at night. The first few days our pup was not keen but we stuck it out and he got the idea in the end. Good luck x

hi suburban, had a blanket over her crate,door open all day, cosy blanket inside, tried treats inside. when we have dinner i used to place her in there with kong or treats for her (she would jump up at table to get DC's food) she's ignore the treats/kong and bark - but it was a sqealing bark that sounded like i was killing her!

I tried throught out the day and before i went to bed but she was just too noisy, had the DC's and neighbours to think of at dead of night! :)

I think some would agree/not. If the dog wee's in the house gently rub there nose in it say no and then put them outside. I did this for a week and NEVER did a wee again in the house.

Dont rub there nose in unless you see them do it as they wont understand, or doing infront of you which has happened to me many of times!!!

Id put them outside straight away or maybe give little small treats for poo's outside.

Hi OP, hope you are having some success! It can feel like a never-ending process but I'm sure you'll get there in the end. Re rubbing their noses in it - well I've never done that but when our pup did a wee indoors we would take him to the puddle and tell him it was a "no" and he did seem to get the message. He knew it was wrong but when they are little they just physically can't help it so personally I wouldn't punish.
