Blocked anal glands

I've figured that my dog has blocked anal glands; she scouts, excites a foul smelling brown liquid every now and again.

Trouble is there is no way she will let me or a vet help by expressing them for her without it being traumatic for her. We can muzzle her but she hates anyone going near her bottom!

Does anyone have any experience or tips on anything that will help? Diet etc?she is on a dry food diet and poos solid poo 3-4 times a day.

I'd be surprised if they were actually blocked, it's more likely they are full and either you or the vet need to manually express them. Leaving them full will make her uncomfortable and prone to infection.

It sounds as though she may be over fed - 3/4 poos a day are a lot, and anal glands sometimes fill because the body is trying to get rid of excess nutrition. What is she fed? It could also be caused by a food intolerance.

If they are expressed by the vet properly but keep filling up quickly and causing problems she could have the glands removed.

No experience of this but it has been suggested for my dog.

I have to manually express my dog's anal glands every 7-10 days. He's broken, you see. I tried raw carrots, a spoonful of bran on his food, and changing him to the best food I could buy (Burns). Nothing made any difference. His poo is solid, he is just plumbed wrong. The smell is like nothing on this side of Hades if they get infected. He had his first infection at 14 weeks old. I'd take your dog to the vet to have them expressed, and then learn to do it yourself (honestly, it's not hard). Try changing food, bran etc, you might get lucky

She has 2 bowls of dry complete food a day (plus what dd feeds her when I'm not looking). Its the correct quantity for her weight, she's just very regular and always has been.

We'll get an app with the vets then and look at diet and intolerances.

Don't fancy expressing them myself but i do love the bloomin dog! The smell is unbelievable [sick]
