Remember how I said things were a bit boring now Devil Dog was a well adjusted member of canine society?

I lied. It was lovely. I'll go back to only having well adjusted dogs now please.

Meet puppy...

Puppy chews his lead. I bought puppy a chain link lead, he now bites the other dog's leads or the back of my coat.

Puppy leapfrogs about on the end of his lead if another walker so much as blinks in his direction. He cannot be stroked by small children because he will pounce at them and knock them down.

Puppy barks in the house a lot. Every time I move anywhere. Even immediately after his walk. The only walk that tires him out is chasing my Dad's flying whippet about for two hours, which we can only do a couple of times a week. Chasing my whippet does not have the same effect, she is not fast enough.

Puppy gave me a warning nip the other night when I tried to get him off his bed to go out for a wee before we all went up to bed. He didn't growl first Sad He didn't break the skin, or mark me in anyway, it was a very gentle nip. He still should have growled first.

Puppy shites about 7 times a day. Raids bins and runs off into the yard with anything he has stolen from bins.

Puppy is broked. I don't have time to train him much until the dc are back at school, which cannot come quick enough atm.

Puppy has good points. He is very gentle with children in the house, he ignores the cat totally. His recall is superb. He is very nice to look at.

Ahh, you reassure me Grin

Tell me...you're a doggy experty type...a 9 month old that jumps/barks and gives a small growl at strange dogs it encounters is just learning doggy manners and isn't automatically developing dog aggression, is it?

D0oinMeCleanin · 27/08/2012 15:33

A lot of dogs go through fear stages. The key is not to accidentally encourage or reinforce it by being unsure yourself or by dragging the dog away/picking it up, thus reinforcing there is something to be afraid of.

BAT seems to be the new way to train this, although it's not something I know much about but it's worth Googling. There are loads of YouTube vids explaining it.

You could also try training a look at me command and tell the dog to look at you when another dog passes in return for a treat.

Puppy fortunately is great with other dogs. So great in fact he will stop at nothing to go and play with them including jumping over my two dogs while they are still leashed and tangling the leads up around his legs resulting in us all being dragged to floor in a tangled heap

How lovely for you Wink

Thanks for that..I'll look it up. He's always been on the submissive side, refusing to pass a smaller dog, etc. Then he got a bit dominant with the older dog regarding food, so we have to make sure we don't try and feed them together. I think that's more that he's a dustbin and thinks he might miss out.

This doesn't seem aggression, but I'm not willing to find out by letting him get too close if he's barking, etc. I'll take treats with me today and do the 'look at me'. He was still willing to sit at the roadside when he could see the other dog a few feet away, and he was by no means pulling me. I think it's just that as he's a Staffy and they have a known tendency for dog aggression if not well managed, I want to be super aware of the possibility.

Hehe well i'm obviously blessed. My pup shreds my mail, which is fabulous security feature!
Shes gradually pruning the garden and bringing all the sticks inside to be hoovered satisfactorily.
She piddles whenever anyone comes to visit, so the carpet gets extra cleaning.
And she keeps away my 5 yr olds most annoying friends who dont like dogs!!!
Love your posts! :)

JaxTellerIsMyFriend · 29/08/2012 08:32

dooin have I missed something here? When did you get another puppy? And what is it? And WHY? Grin

You sure like a challenge! you loon

Have to say that made me laugh a lot this morning. Wink

He is lurcher pup. 10 months old. He's only staying until he finds his forever home. He came straight from the pound. I was told he was quiet, just like Devil Dog he was very quiet, when he first arrived, you'd think I'd have learned by now, no? Just like Devil Dog he was actually terrified, once he settled in and realised he he was here to stay and recovered from the pound he was actually anything gut quiet.

He gets to go out with the flying whippet tonight so at least I have a quiet night to look forward. Flying whippet walks are off lead, so there will be no attempted murders today Grin

He's actually lovely, very loving most of the time, just very puppyish and it's clear he's had very little training. We can sort him and he'll make someone a lovely pet.

He sounds adorable. Thanks for the laugh :). I could do with a flying whippet to tire Dog2 out.

GobHoblin · 29/08/2012 16:56

Well that will teach me for laughing... chewed through collar here this morning!!

mistlethrush · 29/08/2012 16:59

Dooin - our mad collie cross loved a frisbee - any chance he would retrieve for you?

MissBetseyTrotwood · 29/08/2012 20:05

You're funny. He's welcome on a flying greyhound zoom anytime. Just let me muzzle the grund first though OK?
