Good rescues within an hour or so of Somerset

hello, just after some recommendations of decent rescues within a drive of Somerset. Happy to drive a couple of hours or so from the wells area. We have a pug cross and would now like to get a larger rescue dog to join her. We have two children so the rescue will need to be one that adopts to homes with children, thanks!

Greyhound rescue west of england?
Dogs trust in salisbury?

kitsmummy · 26/08/2012 17:29

Love greyhounds but dh doesn't like them. Will look at dogs trust and bath but I know that mums net doesn't generally seem to like the RSPCA?

St Giles Kennels just outside Taunton? They do rescue.

What about Heavens Gate at Pylle/Ditcheat way? When I got in touch recently they said they don't often have dogs suitable for homing with children but they do come in occasionally.

They suggested registering interest and then just waiting until the right 'bomb-proof' dog comes along.

Alternatively, have a look on the Many Tears website. Some of the dogs on there are fostered at Brean which isn't too far away.

Our whippet was from the RSPCA - they were fine and we visited him a lot before finally rehoming him. I think the main problem people have with them is that I don't think they are as no-kill as they make out. I may be wrong on that though.

Bath cats and dogs home in claverton.

Also there is a smaller animal rescue in shepton mallet called Happy landings. Google, they have a website I think. :) Always here good things!

SheilaWheeler · 26/08/2012 17:50

Ooops, yep Bonkey is right! It's Happy Landings, not Heavens Gate!

Heavens Gate is Langport.

Verne animal sanctuary near chard is fantastic. We have had two dogs from them. Have a look on their website, they have a list of some of the dogs in need of a new home.

Elliew70 · 29/08/2012 18:46

Meant Ferne not Verne, bloody predictive txt, sorry!

Black Retriever x rescue are based in Wiltshire although their dogs are fostered all over the country - they are very honest and careful - we had our DDog from them - he is fab and exactly as described!
