Dog has this in one ear. So far, anti-biotic resistant, has had his ears flushed under general anaesthetic, is now on (unlicensed) drops with silver, which don't seem to be doing the trick.
Help!
TIA.

Has it been cultured and checked for sensitivity?

Dawndonna · 20/08/2012 10:02

Yes, three swabs sent off, we've tried the ones that were supposed to work. At my wits end. He's only four and he's gorgeous!

It can take very long course the last dog I treated with multimedia rant pseudomonas took 100 days of antibiotics to get clear cultures.

Dawndonna · 20/08/2012 13:34

Oh good grief! At least there is some home for the poor wee thing though.
Thank you, it's reassuring to know that there is an end to it for him. I hate seeing him scratching and hurting.

Our Cocker had pseudomonas really badly. He had it in his eyes, ears, feet, anus, around his mouth. You name it, he had it there. The only antibiotic that actually held it at bay was Baytril, the strongest one there is. His was worst case scenario though, because he was 12 and had diabetes & Cushings.

How old is your dog?

wildfig · 20/08/2012 17:53

Oh, big sympathy. My dog had this and I was sick with worry. The vet had to try various different treatment drops and treatments, but he was determined to find one that worked - in the end he did, and TOUCH WOOD it's been clear for a couple of years. So don't give up hope!

Dawndonna · 21/08/2012 17:17

Aww, Bavarainlass and Wildfig it's awful, isn't it.
Mines a Ruby Cavalier King Charles. He's four.

My vet is fabulous, he rang today, ahead of our appointment on Thursday, just to see how it's going and to let me know he's going to show me how to run the clippers over the inside of his ears to keep them hair free.
It's difficult, I was still getting yellow muck out yesterday, but they do look better today, but I thought that last Tuesday and the vet took a look inside and said operation on Thursday.
I have my fingers crossed.
My dog isn't really mine, he belongs, officially to twin dds. But, like any dog, I do the walking, feeding etc. and let's be honest, I'm fifty three and my youngest are sixteen - he's my baby!

Quick update:
After another lot of the silver solution, Theo seems to have been cured.
Hurrah!
Now to pay an expensive bill!

I could cry.
He now has it in the other ear. He has to go and have the ear flushed out tomorrow.
Here we go again.

Oh no I'm so sorry to hear that. I can't offer any advice I'm afraid but I know how horrible it is when your pet gets poorly. Really hope this round of treatment sees it off.

Dawndonna · 20/11/2012 14:20

An update.
We have been to see a specialist. He has had further treatment and is on steriods. Latest swab came back yesterday and he's clear! Hurrah!
Thank goodness for pet insurance though, the cost was eye watering!
