We have 2 dogs,a retired 3 legged greyhound (7) & a deaf JRT (16).
DH walks them 6am before he goes to work & then at about 6pm,after tea,and at weekends too.
Not very fair???

What's not fair?

We have a 5yo greyhound, and I walk him, 7.30am just after DP has gone to work, and then around 3pm-ish before DP gets home at 4. Roughly the same at weekends except it's a bit later on sunday mornings.
I badgered and pestered DP till he caved in and agreed to a greyhound, conditions being that he his my dog and I walk him. Which I do, with great pleasure!

CakeMeIAmYours · 09/08/2012 14:40

Normally we do it together, sometimes it is DH on his own, sometimes me on my own.

Fairly even split of responsibilities really

ithastobeNAICEham · 09/08/2012 14:43

I used to walk all 3 of mine (2 are mine and one is my OH's) but as I'm now heaavily pg I can no longer do it! The bigger 2 dogs pull on the lead on the way to the local field and the pup will only recall to whistles (which I can't do) so usually I don't let her off. As the big dogs are a st bernard and a staff they are quite strong and its just not possible atm!

My OH walks them twice a day, usually at aaround 9am-ish and then again at around 4pm. The pup and the staff are inside so they get let out to go to the toilet, the st bernard has a pen outside and that gets cleaned once a day.

Personally, I can't see an issue with the walks your Ddogs are getting atm.

baskingseals · 09/08/2012 14:45

same as cunny. i wanted the dog, therefore i walk, feed, cuddle him.
dh mostly ignores.

TantrumsAndOlympicGoldBalloons · 09/08/2012 14:50

I walk my dogs at 6:30am, DH walks then at 2pm I walk the big one at 5pm and we walk then together at 9pm

Stoney666 · 09/08/2012 15:00

I do most of the walks at the moment but it does change from time to time. Once in the morning usually before 7.30 and once in the evening after 6.30.

Ephiny · 09/08/2012 15:18

If you're both happy with it, there's no problem. Does he want you to do more walking?

Usually DH and I walk ours together in the morning before I go to work, DH (working from home) lets them out at lunchtime, and then we have a dog walker later in the afternoon.

Arabellasmella · 09/08/2012 15:49

take it in turns here, i only work 2 days a week, so on my 3 days off i do it, and on work days he does it before we leave. we generally go together after tea, and at weekends we either all go together or one of us begs the other!!

MonsPubis · 09/08/2012 15:57

I do it. DC will if they are around.

Aquelven · 09/08/2012 15:59

I walk the little ones, Dh walks the bigger ones, mostly, though sometimes one who's a lazy beggar tags along with us.

BitterAndTwistedChairDodger · 09/08/2012 16:17

DH takes them for a quick half hour run in the morning before work, I take them for an hour run for BigDog / walk/carry for PupDog after lunch.

If DH is on a day shift, one of us will go out for another 45mins or so after dinner with BigDog. If he is on the later shift, he will run BigDog around the lake when he gets in.

Obviously when PupDog is old enough for a proper walk, he will go with us but he is too little atm.

RedwingS · 09/08/2012 16:31

Chickens, are you missing out on dog walks? That wouldn't be seen as very fair in our house. We both go if we can, otherwise we take it in turns. If one of us has missed out on a few walks in a row we start to get grumpy and the dogs get extra walks to make up!!

chickensaresafehere · 09/08/2012 16:34

I wanted the greyhound.
Me & the JRT came as a package 8 years ago!!
Initially he adored the JRT,took her to work with him, fussed her lots.
Then I decided to get a retired hound,he didn't say no.But now adores her & doesn't pay much attention to the JRT.
I love them equally, they are 2 totally different personalities though, which took some getting used to!!
I am a full time carer for my dd with SN,making it difficult to walk the dogs.
But he has suggested recently that he is fed up of walking them twice a day(he still does it though).
Do your dc's walk the dog/s??
Thinking of doing a walking rota & including my older dd(12) in it,then it s not so much of a chore for him or am I being too understanding??

My children walk the family JRT

Normally in the morning just before 11.00am then again after dinner at 6.00pm

RedwingS · 09/08/2012 16:40

He could always look after your dd while you walk the dogs, if he wants a change?
I think it's a nice idea to include your older dd in the dog walking.

I think it's a good idea to include the DC, my DD doesn't have a choice, she is 14mo and I'm a SAHM :o we've had the hound since DD was 7.5mo, so only just over 6 months. DP has only come with us on a bog standard walk once (by bog standard I mean not getting in the car and driving to the woods/beach etc) but I don't mind that, I love walking my dog, in the first 6 weeks of owning him I lost over a stone in weight just by walking him twice a day every day :)

newpup · 09/08/2012 16:56

I have a 4 year old lab and I always walk her. DH not a dog lover and she is my dog although he does occasionally do it if I am ill or out.

I walk her once a day for about 1.5 hours, sometimes 2 hours and on a friday she only gets about an hour. She is very fit and healthy and not at all overweight so I obviously give her what she needs.

I walk at different times every day depending on my schedule but try and go straight from the schoolrun during term time.

I love walking most days, the fresh air and changing seasons but sometimes on those days when it has rained for days on end and the mud is endless it is more of a chore!

Mostly I enjoy our time together outdoors. Smile

hoodoo12345 · 09/08/2012 18:00

I walk both our dogs , if i didn't they would never get walked ...ever.Angry

Depending on how busy i am their walks vary from half hour run across the field or 2/3 hour nature reserve walk.

Signet2012 · 10/08/2012 01:10

Mine is a border collie springer cross who hates going for his walk unless he is going to the beach - he is a very lazy, fair weather dog.

But he does go every night, until we where attacked by 3 dogs in the space of 14 months I used to regularly walk him alone around 11.30 each night. Since then DP always comes, or takes him on his own (more so since I have been PG due to SPD)

Looking forward to getting baby out so I can go again although it will have to be earlier when little one comes obviously!

Ruidh · 10/08/2012 14:12

Me in the morning, me at lunch, me at night...even if DH is in. Oh, and I am 36 weeks pregnant!
I might convince him to do one walk a week, if I'm lucky!
At the weekend, however, we walk together.
DH was the one who wanted a dog but she is definitely my dog and will often ignore DH and not follow any of his commands!
