Dog food question

Lucyellensmum99 · 05/08/2012 21:23

i have two JRTs, our "old" dog, was quite happy (in fact it was his favourite) on tesco tinned dog food, i was always a bit Hmm about it, but thats what we found he liked.

We always fed our other dogs (rotties) on james wellbeloved, but its fucking expensive. First JRT doesn't like it so we went with wet food. JRT is rescue, fed on complete food so we have continued with it - did put him on to tinned but it was not great in the poo dept! Anyway, have been giving him burns organic - again, fecking expensive, especially for two dogs, but hey, they need what they need. Today we were a bit lazy about doing the shopping and it got late and when dp went to the shop to get the "burns" it was shut, so he came home with Bakers complete - i made a big Hmm face as if to say, you aint feeding my boys that shit, but they wolfed it down, really liked it.

What do you feed your dogs on? is Bakers really the work of the devil? Some people do describe it as a load of shite. We only ever gave our rotties either JWB or chappie complete - not been able to find chappie anywhere (we gave the chappie because it was low protein and our rescue rottie had behavioural issues and didn't need rocket fuel dog food!). Chappie cheap but ive always liked it. (not personally you understand!)

Do you think there is a snobbery about dog food? Do we have to go off to pets at home/garden centre/out of town petshop or can we just pick up bakers from the supermarket.

My bichon had bakers but it made him wilder than normal which is practically feral he and my shih-chon now have asda own wet with a bit of gyppo mixer. They love it. The breeder said the feed the bichon royal canin (so expensive!!) and we tried burns but they weren't fussed. It is a source of guilt though...

cherrypieplum · 05/08/2012 21:31

And yes can be huge snobbery but if they like and are healthy...?

Mine would be eating Bakers (though I've read awful stuff online) if it didnt make them insane!

MoaningMingeWhingesAgain · 05/08/2012 21:33

Bakers is the work of the devil, yes Grin

Skinners is pretty good quality and about the same price as Bakers. My two are very happy with it, and because its working dog food it is VAT free.

free delivery when you get 2 sacks from here but sometimes cheaper other places - I shop around each time I need some. I would maybe try a small bag from a local petshop then bulk buy if they get on with it - most petshops can order it in for you if they don't stock it.

MoaningMingeWhingesAgain · 05/08/2012 21:35

BTW our older dog loved bakers, especially the meaty chunks. But it is maybe 4% meat derivatives? not even meat - just the scrapings off the floor. Plus they are owned by Purina (Nestle) so when I knew more about it we switched.

Chappie is well thought of for a low cost option though.

Bakers is very evil! Used to send my Staffy into a hyper.

We spend the fortune out of JWB because of a grain allergic Staffy but if I could get away with a cheaper (but not as evil) food, I would. Paying out for the food saves in vets bills and insurance!

There is a bit of snobbery but if it works for your dog and your vet agrees who are we to ague?!

Lucyellensmum99 · 06/08/2012 09:34

Well, my dogs did got mental last night after having it, and are currently engaged in full scale terrier wars as i type. Trouble is, my DP is a twat, he really is, because he bought two backs, one adult one puppy, rescue is about 9 months and has opened them both - i really can't afford to throw it away Hmm twunt!!!!! Dogs are enjoying themselves though

Bakers has all sorts of weird things in it - including food colouring... Hmm

I think some opinions of food are definitely just snobbery, but some are just junk food, Bakers is one of them tbh.

JennerOSity · 06/08/2012 14:38

I avoid Bakers as based on what is expelled at the other end after eating it - I can't think it is anything other than garbage. My vet friend doesn't approve of it either for nutritional reasons.

Purplemonster · 06/08/2012 14:41

Bakers really is bad. I'd try to avoid anything with colouring in it. I feed mine Arden Grange, it's still expensive but about £10 a bag cheaper than JWB (for a very BIG bag you understand, I've got a big dog!)

Lucyellensmum99 · 06/08/2012 15:48

ah, they sent him home with Arden grange from the dogs trust, if its a tad cheaper i might put him on that, but i thought you could only buy it online? It will be that or burns i think. They dont like JWB which is a shame because its a great food. Judging by the smell coming from the pair of them i don't htink im going to be using up the whole two bags DP bought home, i might donate them palm them off to my mum for her dog.

Our lab loves Bakers and at 12 yrs old the vet has just passed him as fab for his age. Vet says Bakers is fine although not a fan of the colouring.

I have said on here before lab came to us at 6 months on Arden Grange and we are convinced it was the cause of cloudy eye problems which cleared when changed diet (all other causes pretty much ruled out).

Lucyellensmum99 · 09/08/2012 17:55

UPDATE Bakers IS shit dog food! As i said, i wouldnt have bought it through choice but didnt want to waste what DP bought, but i reckon we have used about a 5th of the food and i sent DP for a bag of burns, the bakers can go in the bin! My dogs have produced so much crap and it STINKS!! my oldest JRT has lost weight and actually looks crap. Never again Angry

Bakers is terrible. It's got god knows what artificial flavourings and colourings in it.
We have it to our staffy twice because we hadn't had a chance to go to a proper shop and it was that or tesco value.

After 2 days his coat was dull and flaky and I won't mention what it did to his bowels.
