and ran in to your house and started shouting?

would it be normal in this situation for a dog to attack?

or would that be only if it was trained to attack?

My dog would be completely thrilled and excited, run around happily barking and wagging her tail and assuming they were her new best friends!

nailak · 03/08/2012 05:03

lol, sounds like a nice dog!

Of the two dogs I had growing up, and the one my parents have now, all three would bounce around with excitement and try to lick you to death.

The golden retriever would have also attempted to mount you and hump your leg quite enthusiastically!! Grin

Attack?? Mind wouldn't have known the meaning Wink

diddl · 03/08/2012 07:33

If it was in the night-nothing-he sleeps in my daughter´s roomBlush

If not he´d bark & growl, then probably frighten himself because he´d done that & run away!

When my sister was burgled, they used golf clubs to hit the dog & shut him in the bathroom.

Aquelven · 03/08/2012 07:36

One would sleep through it, another would run & hide upstairs & the rest would say come in, have a biscuit, can we get you a cup of tea before licking them to death.

HecateHarshPants · 03/08/2012 07:41

I don't have a dog, but my sister's dog would run and hide behind them and bark his head off quite crossly, from the safety of behind their legs Grin

Unless they were being hurt, then I think he'd attack. He's very protective of them, particularly my niece and while he is a big old gooey lump of softness, I really do think if someone was hurting her - he'd bite them

hellhasnofurylikeahungrywoman · 03/08/2012 07:42

Mine would saunter off the sofa he's not allowed to sleep on and greet said intruders with a wag and a lick. If they ignored him he would simply go back to his other favourite bed space, the middle stair, so he could cunningly trip them up on their way out of the door with all of their loot.

Haemadoots · 03/08/2012 07:45

My dog at the time was a big German shepherd and she ran outside , then realising something wasn't right barked her head off!

McFarts · 03/08/2012 07:50

Mine would attack! he's not trained to, he is a lovely friendly black lab, but he is VERY protective! and does guard the house. I stupidly left the back door wide open when i went on the school run a few months ago (long story) we have shared access with our neighbor but she rarely use it she usually uses her front door. However on this day she did, she thought it was odd that the back door was open as she knew i'd be on the school run, she stuck her head round the door to check everthing was ok, but the dog would not let her any further, i doubt he would have bitten her, but is certainly looks the part.

Mama1980 · 03/08/2012 07:55

Mine would attack or at least make one hell of a noise. She's pretty protective I doubt if she would bite though unless we were being hurt or they came to close to my son in a threatening manner-they are inseparable.

tootssweet · 03/08/2012 08:12

Our dog would bark like an eejit as they walked up the path never mind broke the door! He's very noisy. He would then run towards & then quickly away from them several times growling & barking. I like to think he would be protective if anyone attacked us but think he'd prob just bark -again!
We had been told that our local thieves / dealers avoid our house because they think our dog is 'mental'. Bless him.

D0oinMeCleanin · 03/08/2012 08:50

Devil Dog would growl his wee head off and then if they didn't go away he would Hmm

Whippy would be horrified and would retire to her crate.

WitchOfEndor · 03/08/2012 08:55

My dog would bark loudly and then cower!

thestringcheesemassacre · 03/08/2012 08:58

My old dog (passed away in Feb) would of had a complete SHIT fit and attack the person. He was a big GSD and our trainer always said he would protect us.

SquishyCinnamonSwirls · 03/08/2012 08:58

He'd go nuts. If anyone even knocks on the door after dark he barks and accompanies me to the front door to see who it is. If it's a friend then he'll give them a lick, expect some fuss and then go back to bed. If it's a takeaway delivery he'd just go back to bed. If it's someone I don't know then he stays with me and guards me and if he doesn't like the look of them would growl until they backed up away from the door to the top of our steps.

He's a big softy with us but if someone came into the house in an aggressive way then he'd bark like mad and more than likely bite them if they came any further. Especially if dh wasn't here and I was on my own. He's extremely protective, we rescued him as a pup and now he seems to think that he has to protect me from any man that we don't know.

SparkyTGD · 03/08/2012 08:58

I think she'd bark, growl & be a bit scary. She barks at anyone (inc friends) I answer the door to and only stops when she realises its someone she knows.

SparkyTGD · 03/08/2012 09:00

Never been trained to be like this, btw, she is just suspicious of anyone entering 'her' territory.

LaurieFairyCake · 03/08/2012 09:01

Pee.

All over them, all over the floor. With excitement and fear.

topknob · 03/08/2012 09:05

She'd go mental ! She is fab during the day always comes to the door with me, but at night ANY suspect noise outside and she growls, if I go to the door she will come with me again and if someone is walking past she barks, ALOT !

UterusUterusGhali · 03/08/2012 09:14

My last dog, a GSX, would have attacked. (She did have a bark-a-lot command, as I was 16 & homeless when I got her, and I felt I needed protecting. She was a pussy cat though.)

Don't know about my Staffy.
My dad once walked in while I was upstairs and just sat down for a while reading the paper, tickling her tummy. Didn't hear a bloody sound! (She'd never met my dad.)

I would think it was natural though.
Why, has a dog bitten a copper raiding someone's house?

akaemmafrost · 03/08/2012 09:17

During the day he would bark, growl and and probably snap.

During the night, nothing. Don't know why. Night time is sleep time for my old boy and nothing and no one changes that!

akaemmafrost · 03/08/2012 09:19

I used to a GSD/rough collie cross who was VERY protective though. Would have been a big mistake to break in when he was around. He went for someone who flashed at me once. He was a great dog.

Catsmamma · 03/08/2012 09:26

of mine, Keller would bark like a complete looney if someone broke down the door

....he is still taken by surprise that the children come home for school everyday, he rarely does not bark when anyone comes in, but he also does the GSD singing thing so it is purely overexcitement and not aggression.

Zac would run to the door to see what Kelly was barking at and then either run to sit right next to me, or sit on is sofa, he is more the strong silent type. But he did spot the Postie the other day and did his single MEGAwoof as she passed the open window and made her jump...they are great friends and have met in the garden but I guess he just surprised her as she had not spotted him in the window

Magic likes to join in the barking and thinks it is all a huge game.

I doubt they'd do any damage to anyone, but I guess you never know.

RobotHamster · 03/08/2012 09:26

CrazyDog would stand and bark but then would like on the floor being as submissive as possible.

HairyDog would bark and bark and snarl and bare teeth and scare the living shite out of anybody that dared break in (these are my parents dogs, not mine). She's the sweetest, loveliest dog (border collie) and most of the time has a beautiful face. When she's snarling though - looks like a crazed wolf.

Bossybritches22 · 03/08/2012 09:27

My ex I almost choked on our drinks in the pub one night when we heard a strange man talking about
"that vicious bugger at the Bossyhouse"

Good to know our soft as butter GSD /lab had such a reputation, if later worrying that some random man knew our house that well!

Same dog another time nearly had a chums head off when he hallolooed in through an open window when I was upstairs one summer + pooch was guarding his baby!
