and ran in to your house and started shouting?

would it be normal in this situation for a dog to attack?

or would that be only if it was trained to attack?

My old Border Collie- She would try defend her family. She used to break up arguments between me and my sister and Heaven help anyone who tried to hurt my mother.

MrsRhettButler · 03/08/2012 21:01

Mine would attack and I've definitely not trained him this way. When the police raided my house (bit of a mix up btw) they came with a warrant and wouldn't put more than a foot in until I had secured the dogs (we had two then but only one now)

Bastard police man stood next to his crate tapping on it, winding him up and informing me that my dog was a pit! Angry he's a staffy x ABD

AdoraBell · 04/08/2012 04:39

Two of mine would defend, rather than attack, as they would perceive this as a threat. The 2 puppies would run for cover, but one of them is getting bolder and I reckon in a couple more months she'll be front and centre. Of course the person would have to get passed the dogs to reach the door, they spend the night marauding sleep in the gardenGrin

GhostShip · 04/08/2012 13:13

Mine would go insane. I have 3 boxers, the loveliest kindest gentlest trio of dogs ever, but don't cross their territory without their owner!

When I lived at home with them (with my parents) someone tried to burgle our house. They didn't attack the burgler, just pinned him down in the floor until my dad came in from work o

JennerOSity · 04/08/2012 13:21

All my dogs have been/are family pets and not trained to attack.

dog 1. labrador, would have floored the intruder and pinned him down while snarling ferociously in his face and drooling saliva. If met with resistance may well have fought back and done damage. (Did happen)

dog 2. Staffy terrier, would have laid in her box while growling and looking very not happy, not actually sought a confrontation but would then have bitten intruder if they tried to go near her, the blood stained glove would then form part of the evidence for the prosecution as the DNA would capture the culprit (Also happened)

dog 3. Current pet. Lab collie cross, would either leap around with his new friends or run and hide depending on if the intruder was shouting or not.

Ghostship My nan had a boxer, she'd let anyone in, but she scared the Prudential guy witless, standing in the back door hackles up, teeth on show and growling, as he tried to leave!! My Nan was upstairs, he'd called to say he was there and Nan had said the money's ready for you on the table, so he collected that and said he'd be off. ....the dog thought otherwise and refused to let him leave till my Nan came down!

frustratedpants · 04/08/2012 13:30

My lab would have his hackles up and be barking very loudly. he's 13mths so at that jumpy stage where everything that isnt normal scares him he would also be jumping up/bouncing and slobbering all over them. And if they look at him he'd roll on his back at their feet. He also wouldn't let them escape without petting him.
what a fabulous guard dog I have!

GhostShip · 04/08/2012 13:50

Cats mamma that made me laugh, I could just imagine mine doing the same

ChinUpChestOut · 06/08/2012 16:04

Mine's a Beagle. He'd bring them his toy beagle to play with, and then show them the fridge.

lljkk · 06/08/2012 16:12

I knew from title what this thread was about. I felt unhappy listening to the news story about it today. :( Can't blame a guard dog breed for behaving like a guard-dog breed. But I suspect the owner wasn't even trying to call it off, and that's the real crime.

MrsRobertDuvallHasRosacea · 06/08/2012 16:14

The owner refused to call it off.
Scum.

Purplemonster · 06/08/2012 16:26

NOBODY would be stupid enough to break into my house. I don't know what my GSD would actually do, but she's scary enough to make people pick another house to break into. The other stupid dog would just be pleased to see them.

nailak · 06/08/2012 23:41

^^
yeah but you think the police wouldnt be stupid enough to raid a house with a pitbull in it.

TheCatInTheHairnet · 06/08/2012 23:58

One of my dogs would bite. But he's only 10lbs, so it would be a bit of a pathetic attack, tbh.

The other one would bark if he felt I felt threatened. Otherwise, he would be another one to lick them to death and show them the fridge.

Ephiny · 07/08/2012 10:50

This happened to us. BearDog didn't attack, I think he was as scared and confused as we were tbh.

If it happened again though, things might be different. He got a lot more protective/guarding after the incident, and we have to be careful as he can growl and lunge at strange men especially if they come near the house or near me.

I think it must have been the first time he'd had a bad experience of humans.

toomuchmonthatendofthemoney · 07/08/2012 11:05

My black lab would bark like crazy but then roll over for a tummy rub I think. I really hope imnever, ever have to find out for real.

We were living in Germany in flats (military accommodation). The flats had cellars that had the washing machines and drying lines(not allowed to hang wet washing on balcony!)we went down, Dog and I. He sat happy for a few minutes whilst I got washing out of our machine and started pegging it out. Al of a sudden he came to me growling and his lips disappeared all teeth and snarl. A man with a knife started walking towards me through the lines of wet washing. He did not stop and dog launched himself. Man ran out of back door and dog chased him. Phoned military police who came upon dog and man. They said afterwards that dog had smelt either my fear or the aggression from man. Dog saved my life - he was a rottweiller! Never before or after so much as growled. He died of cancer aged 4 :(

nailak · 09/08/2012 03:58

that sounds terrifying, the man also sounds a little dumb tbh, why would you walk up to a woman with a rotweiller? what happened to the man? was he a crack head or what?

marriedtoagoodun · 09/08/2012 15:11

He had escaped from secure mental hospital. We were in transit accommodation as no quarters on the patch. People would jam open the maindoor and that is how he got in. As all blocks of flats have these washing areas the police theorised he was looking for clothes. He would not have seen dog as he was lying behind me. We had the dog from 6 weeks old and he was such a softy. I would have sworn blind that he would never attack, but he did - only that once. He was very well trained for domestic purposes, sit, heel etc but never any protection work. He had to pass a test to get a licence for him in Germany, one of the things they do is tap the dog on the nose with newspaper to see if that makes them snap. My boy just sneezed :)

Arabellasmella · 09/08/2012 15:50

mine would be very very excited and there would be lots and lots of jumping up.

Grin InThePotty Grin

floranora · 10/08/2012 07:02

my dogs only bark at people walking past or knocks on the door if i am in!

I would think that my springer would have a bloody good old bark, but it is a frightened bark as he was badly treated before i got him. my lab has a bark, but it is more a 'well if springer chops is have a bark then so am i!' kind of bark.

i recently had a man round measuring my flat and he was obviously of a nervous disposition because my springer picked up on it, and instead of his scaredy bark he was growling and doing little 'tuffty' barks, he was trying to dominate and intimidate the poor man!

if you have asked me what my lab would do a few yrs ago i would have said bugger all, but i was recently sat on a park bench reading and there was a path behind me that came towards me and then off to the side. i was in a world of my own until my lab started snarling and growling and when i turned round there was a young lad behind me being held back by my dog!! the boy said he just was going to ask for a fag, but it didnt matter now!

so i think if my lab thinks i am scared, or unaware of someone he will hold them back and let me know! they luff their mummy!!

marriedtoagoodun · 10/08/2012 13:38

Flora oral you have it exactly right. The dog handler from the police told me it is all about smell. The dog can smell fear or aggression. Maybe it was just a request for a cigarette but if he had drugs in his system or was going to be argumentative then the dog would smell something 'off'. I miss my og so much especially as am on my own so much. Still once hubby leaves army and we settle we will be getting a puppy. :)

marriedtoagoodun · 10/08/2012 13:40

Flora sorry auto corrected on your name! And of course I miss my dog although I am sure an og s quite nice too(blush)
