WW your dog do if people broke your front door down?

and ran in to your house and started shouting?

would it be normal in this situation for a dog to attack?

or would that be only if it was trained to attack?

I'm with saffron. Bloody mad dog would jump up if they started to attack me, but wouldn't bite. Would try to lick them to death. She might bark, but that would be a 'don't leave me out' bark rather than a 'watch out, I'm going to kill you' bark! Doesn't help that she looks like a blardy teddy bear as well (cavapoo). No deterrent at all for thieves or ne'er do wells.

FundusCrispyPancake · 03/08/2012 09:35

My dog would hide under the table and stay really quiet.

We know this because we once lost the house keys and had to kick the front door in.

Still love her though :-D

TeacakeTilly · 03/08/2012 10:36

Mine would bark her head off and I reckon may attack, though I don't think she'd need to because she's a very strong rottie with the ability to look pretty damn scary Grin

They wouldn't have to know that she's utterly soft and hasn't ever hurt a fly Smile

CalamityJones · 03/08/2012 10:39

When faced with any situation, new or old, my Weimaraner generally farts. He's incredibly protective of the baby though, so anyone going into her bedroom might get an even less pleasant greeting.

topknob · 03/08/2012 10:57

Oh should have said, yes she would attack/bite if we were being hurt, if someone was just shouting she would bark and jump up at me to assess the situation, but I can tell her to 'get him' and she'll run after dh :o :o barking ! She knows the difference though.

MrsZoidberg · 03/08/2012 11:00

We were only talking about this the other day. The conclusion we came to was:

HuskyX - Scream "I'M Free" and run for the hills

GSD Bitch - Loads of noise, threatening behaviour - but we really don't know if she would attack. Most likely if DS was in danger, but not so sure us.

GSD Boy - Very fearsome barking and highly likely to attack - friend or foe - if he's surprised.

It can be hard to tell, we had a soft as butter GSD, who was scared of everything. He had never shown a sign of aggression to people or other dogs. We had workmen in, I had said "Do Not open the Lounge door - just knock and I will come out" (this was to stop the dogs escaping btw) . Stupid idiot opened the door, and dopey dog leapt over me and the sofa and I only just managed to grab him as his teeth went to snap on the man's hand! The only thing we can think of was he was protecting DS who was lying on the floor playing.

MrsJohnDeere · 03/08/2012 11:06

Mine would bark like crazy

ornellaia · 03/08/2012 11:11

Mine would wag his tail, lick them to death, and probably try to follow them out when they'd finished.

SpringHeeledJack · 03/08/2012 11:15

mine (staffs) would be deLIGHted and go insane with wagginess

unless it was a giant squirrel. Then hedog would hide and shedog would attempt to eat it from the feet up

an old lady, seeing me walking my slavering beasts once, said "I hope you haven't got them as guard dogs. Fucking USEless"

Grin
SpringHeeledJack · 03/08/2012 11:15

...why do you ask, naila?

fishybits · 03/08/2012 11:21

One would show them where the good stuff is in return for a cuddle and the other would get between us and the burglars and would defend us to the death.

Sausagedog27 · 03/08/2012 13:05

I've has this- mistaken address by police- she ran upstairs and wee'd all over our bed as she was so frightened. To be fair I can't blame her- I was on my own as dh was away and thought I was being burgled. I nearly wet myself as well. And they didn't apologise, bastards.

To be fair cleaning the bed gave me something to do as I was in such a state I wouldn't have been able to sleep :-(

LookBehindYou · 03/08/2012 13:58

If we were in the house our dog would attack. If we're walking in the dark he growls if I don't like the look of a man hanging around. If the house was empty, not sure but I think he'd react to the violence of the action and go for it.

Cailleach · 03/08/2012 17:44

My neighbours had their door kicked in by the police on behalf of the gas board - there was a gas leak in the house and they couldn't get hold of them at work so it was an emergency situation.

We warned them that they had three dogs, so I volunteered to go in with them, because the dogs were familiar with me. No dice: "health and safety" rules were citied, so no go. They proceeded rather gingerly, only to be greeted with delighted barks, yelps, wagging of tails and many licks. One of them even fetched the guys a football.

The police / gas chaps were rather relieved. "What nice dogs" they said.

And the breeds? One staffy, one rotty, one GSD. You know, all the "vicious" ones... ;)

NarkedRaspberry · 03/08/2012 17:48

Why?

OatyBeatie · 03/08/2012 17:58

I'd love to know why you are asking, nailak. Have you had some sort of bad experience?

I'm relieved to come back to this thread and find that there are a few later contributors to the thread whose dog would attack in that situation. I think mine would. I wish I could say that he wouldn't. I'd rather have a reliably friendly dog than one that could guard my property.

I think he would be frightened and would rush in for a quick bite at the legs of the intruder. Then he would back off straightaway and be very unsure of himself. He is a person russell terrier and I don't think he would do serious harm.

I like the fact that the mere presence of a dog is deterrent enough for most intruders -- because there would inevitably be a wide-awake barking no matter what the time of night. But I would prefer my dog to make friends even with burglars.

OatyBeatie · 03/08/2012 18:00

parson russell terrier, that should be, not person russell terrier. The site of a weird human/terrier hybrid would be a great burglar deterrent.Grin

PersonalClown · 03/08/2012 18:05

I honestly have no idea.
Staffy boy barks at every little noise when DP is working late, even when his car pulls up. Until he 'sees' who it is through the glass of the front door, he's on full bark mode.
Knowing the stupid dog, he'd probably slobber on intruders so they drown in dog drool.
Fluffbutt (labradoodle) would hide. He's a huge ball of fluff with a very loud, deep bark but rarely uses it and hides behind my legs if we greet anyone he doesn't know.

nailak · 03/08/2012 19:32

there was a story about some police men being badly injured when they raided a house

here www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-london-19115190

original story here www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-london-19097338

given it was a pitbull so probably was ilegal anyway?

but i was just wondering what other dogs would do?

and if the police shouldnt have some sort of policy to protect themselves if they know there is a dog in the house?

OP posts:
nailak · 03/08/2012 19:34

"His barrister, Craig Harris, admitted the policemen had been injured by the pitbull in a public place, but asked the jury to consider whether the dog was "dangerously out of control" when it bit them or focusing "targeted aggression" against men who forced entry to the house and then hit it with batons.

He pointed out that the dog had not attacked anyone else in the street outside apart from the policemen."

OP posts:
Choufleur · 03/08/2012 19:37

The worst one of mine would do is wee on them as he would be so excited that people had come to see him. Other dog would bark but not actually do anything.

Poppylovescheese · 03/08/2012 20:42

Both of mine would attack I think. They are very friendly Rhodesian Ridgebacks but VERY protective of me.

OatyBeatie · 03/08/2012 20:53

Oh yes nailak, I remember that case. It did seem to me that the police procedures were at fault much more than the dog's owner. I think the police had a record of the fact that there was a difficult dog there but hadn't passed that info along to the poor officers who smashed the door down.

Inthepotty · 03/08/2012 20:54

Mine would bark like a bugger to show what a big scary boy he is. However, if any intruder said "heellllllo handsome boy!" he wag his tail so hard he'd fall over.

And them help them carry the telly.

OatyBeatie · 03/08/2012 20:55

And as well as police getting hurt, the dog died horribly. It was an awful event.
