I have had merlin for a week now and so far have not been able to do any basic training because he just doesnt stay still long enough. If i have a treat he goes crazy so im having to wait for a brief second for him to be calm to give him it in the hope he realises being calm is good. Its not working.

Help, what can i do?

He is just a baby so don't worry too much about a structured training programme.

However this is when a clicker is fantastic.

Get him used to the clicker eg click and treat and it is great if he is excited for this. You want a keen eager dog.

Once he is used to the clicker which will probably take about 3 seconds! You can start to click the behaviour he offers. eg if you are having a coffee and he just happens to sit, click and treat. If he is lying still and calm click and treat the beginning of a settle command etc.

A keen and eager jiggy puppy is fantasticGrin

Do not put pressure on yourself to have a great trained puppy by 11 weeksGrin enjoy his fun puppy behaviour

Do you exercise him before you train? I find my girl needs to have a walk first. Otherwise she is too high-strung to pay attention to me.

I train when ever I'm with the dog - just random things, so sit and wait before eating (puppies will get this almost immediately and it stops barging for food later in life), sit before crossing a road, wait before I open the door etc etc. Formal training lessons are too long and boring for a puppy.
