Socialisation but hasn't had second injection yet?

We have a puppy who is 9 weeks old. She has had her first injection but not her second and won't for another week and a half and then vet said no going where other dogs have been for a week after that.

All books I've read say socialisation is really important now but how can we when she hasn't had her second injection?

We are socialising her with children, other pets, trips in cars, carrying her round shops etc, is there anything else we should be doing?

Keep on taking her every where you can think of - it is the most important thing you can do for your puppy. The key is to avoid your puppy coming into direct contact with unvaccinated dogs or their faeces, so use your common sense. If you're in a public park, keep on carrying your puppy. If you're in a little used field, your pup would be perfectly well able to run around a little.

Your puppy can play with any dog who has been vaccinated, so if you have friends with dogs, that would also be valuable socialisation.

my pup is nearly 12 weeks and i done the same as you - just carried her while i was out to get her used to the world, kids coming over to stoke her etc...

I took her to meet my neighbours and friends dogs (all vacs done) they had so much fun :)

you can invite people you know with dogs to come to you maybe?

Just carry her everywhere - if you take her somewhere busy, I can pretty much guarantee that everyone will come over to say hello and have a stroke.

You could also buy the 'Sounds Sociable' CD and play that to her, it has all the noises that are likely to alarm your dog, so if you play it to her at home when she is calm and relaxed, she shouldn't be scared of the noises in later life.

We stuck a sign to our front door, together with a bag of treats, saying that if you were going to ring the doorbell, to take a treat, give it to the pup and make a fuss of him when I answered the door. It worked a charm and now he adores postmen or any visitors for that matter

You could also rope in friends to dress up in hats/sunglasses etc and play with her so that she gets used to people dressed differently from you.

I agree with other posts. As many new experiences as you can manage. If you can carry the pup think about: railways station, bus station, summer fairs, markets.... I can remember standing on a freezing cold platform in December to see a steam train coming in. A favourite walk is by the railway, my dogs have never chased the trains.
Other introductions can be putting up umbrellas, vacuuming, mopping floors, lawn mowing....
If there are summer fireworks, take the pup out to experience them, from a distance, act calm and don't make a fuss. It will pay dividends later. Don't let the pup get over-tired, just as you give them short walks, don't let new experiences overwhelm and make them brief.
Check to see if your vets have 'puppy parties' or look for puppy training. I would recommend COAPE trainers who work towards Good Citizen awards and use clicker training.
