Does anyone here have a Podengo?

thinking of getting a second dog and the kc breed questionnaire returned this breed as our ideal dog. Hadn't heard of them and googled and love the look of them. Have read up what I've found online.

Just wondering how people with personal experience have found them temperament wise?

Podencos often crop up with Galgos, and all the ones I've met have been with sighthound peeps who've adopted them through the many excellent rescues doing such wonderful work in Spain. I particularly know one, called Menta - ( a mutual friend of Val and I) she is bright ginger, with HUUUGE ears, and utterly adorable. She lives with three greyhounds and their dad, and they go everywhere together, including for roast dinners at the pub. She seems affectionate, a bit stubborn, but massively loveable.

I have a greyhound already.

You could contact SOS Animals UK (they're on Facebook and have a website - just Google it) They specialise in rescuing dogs in Spain, often Podencos and Galgos so I'm sure they'll be able to help you. They are beautiful dogs, lovely colours but look as if they need a lot of exercise, although maybe they're like greyhounds and like to snooze a lot too!

If you already have a grey, OP, they'd be very complementary (though I'd be tempted to go all Iberian and have a galgo as well!)

Thanks for the info about SOSAnimals, a rescue dog would be ideal as I can skip the puppy stage. Puppies may be cute but blimey they're hard work!

Hope you find a good 'un on SOS Animals. Their FB page is more updated than their website, also they bring a lot of dogs over to foster homes whilst looking for forever homes so perhaps you could even foster one to see it they were suitable for you first... (totally agree about puppies too!)

I've never head of them either but just Googled; they are so cute! . They look like a cross between a Corgi and a Scottish Deer Hound. No practical advice, just wanted to chip in with a purely shallow comment on the cuteness of the breed (especially like the look of the scruffy, wiry ones). Obviously, you should do some more thorough research about temperament and suitability for your situation etc. .

I like the wiry ones best as well. Can't beat a scruffy dog.

I have two Podenco Canarios which I'm sure would be very similar to the Portugese Podengo. They are both rescues from Lanzarote.

We got one, fell in love, got another a year later and if we could afford to keep adding then we would! They are lovely dogs with ridiculous personalities and we absolutely adore their big ears!

Excercise wise, we take them out for an hours off lead exercise in the woods and then they curl up in to a tiny pretzel shape and sleep away the rest of the day. They have a very strong hunting instinct and spend the whole hour tearing round the woods barking their heads off but are the perfect house dogs and very calm and quiet.

Personality wise I would say that the males are dopey and loving while the girls are shrewd and affectionate entirely on their terms! (Probably the same for any breed!)
All I know is that we adore them and they couldn't suit us better!

She's lovely. Very daft and great with my DD who has just turned 8 weeks old.
She took quite a bit of training at first because she is a bit silly... think Scooby Doo haha! She is the most affectionate dog though. I have a collieXwhippet and a staffieX too, and Sukie (Podenco) is the sweetest natured of the three. So much so that we are going to be volunteering as a therapy dog team.

The only thing I would say is that they are meant for hunting, so make sure that you stamp the urge out at an early age. They can be quite powerful (bigger muscles than Greyhounds). having fostered a lot of Greyhounds and lurchers I'd say that with you already having a greyhound, you'd be fine with a gorgeous podenco :)

I'm hoping they might have better recall than a grey, from what I've read they do. My grey has got a habit of disappearing afetr a rabbit and not surfacing for 20 mins.

I was thinking of getting one of the smaller size ones, the Portugese ones come in 3 sizes. One thing dd has always said to me is that she'd love a little dog that lies on her knee. And I must admit my daft grey is too big at times. Causes problems on walks when she won't go over a stile/gate and I can't lift her and we have to turn back. I think a smaller dog next time might be easier.
