Please keep your dog on a lead by roads! Not a horror story

Witnessed a dog leg it away from his owner today straight across a busy road. The reasons was it spotted my cat Grin Neither dog nor cat hurt I must add, but it could have been a different story. Even the best trained dog can forget itself sometimes, and you really don't want that to be the last time...

Could not agree more.
I see dogs off lead on the street all the time and it makes me want to weep.
It only takes a cat, a squirrel or a discarded salmon sandwich...

Saw a dog running about in our village last year. It came across the road at me & my dog straight out in front of a lorry. The poor lorry driver screeched to a halt but couldn't avoid it. He'd almost come to a stop by then so he thankfully didn't hit it very hard but it was enough to knock it off it's feet. It got up and disappeared down the path. A lady came out of a garden opposite and said she knew the owner. I said if I see it loose again I'll take it to a rescue centre. I haven't actually seen it again. I don't know whether it got rehomed or run over.

Yep - mine ran into the side of a bus the other week. He Wanted to kill said bus I think.

Stupid dog.

NEVER done that in his 8 years!

A friend's dog was at the end of his lead as they went around a corner. Dog stepped off the kerb and was run over and killed. It wasn't an extending lead, dog wasn't a metre away from his owner.

I'm sorry to have brought up these traumatic incidents. It just makes me so angry people don't realise the consequences for themselves or others of not keeping dogs on a lead near traffic. sunflower I'm so sorry to hear about your friends dog, that is a real tragedy.

God Sunflower that's awful. Sad

I have a walk to school like that every day. We have to turn a corner into a road with no path right by a house so you can't see round the corner. I always stand in the road and herd the dc's round so if anyone gets hit by a sudden car it'll be me.

With us it was our own fault - we got complacent. 7 years he had never ran off just something on that night made him want to take on a bus! Luckily he was fine but it could of been the end of him. Stark reminder that no matter how well behaved they are unpredictable animals.

I hate seeing dogs off lead near roads - it's lethal. Sad

For new greyhound owners, (as there are particular issues with sighthounds) I always recommend this article here
