recommend a small dog for me

we have always had big dogs, have always been put off small dogs as ppl say they are yappy, and difficult to train, we have not had a dog for 6 years and now dd is 5 we thinks its time we got one but obviously with such a small child we didnt want to go back to having big dogs, can anyone reccomend a breed that is particularly calm i know a lot depends on their training (are they any different to training big dogs), it will be several months before we get one as i like to read up on particular breeds and if i can find a rescue one i would prefer that, thanks in advance

I had a look online for low energy/calm dogs, and a lot of them are quite large (Greyhound) and some are quite rare and hard to get hold of (Clumber Spaniel or Otterhound) as well as being large. My first reaction when someone says they are looking for a calm dog is Greyhound, but you could also look at something like a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel which is definitely more enthusiastic than a greyhound ( who often appear to be Aristocratically detached when they meet you) but their small size means their enthusiasm isn't as overwhelming as that of a Labrador, for example. There are plenty of sites online where you can answer questions and it works out what breed of dog may suit.

( I have a Lab and both dog and child learned quickly how not to collide in the house!)

I would recommend a cavalier too. My cavalier x is very calm and laid back. Even jangling her lead doesn't make her get excited, she just wanders to the front door! Plus not yappy either, at least mine isn't. There are some lovely ex breeding ones on the many tears rescue site.

What about a whippet or Italian Greyhound? These are just smaller versions of greyhounds, but with similar laid-back temperaments...

Have you considered a Lhasa apso? we have a female which we got when the girls were younger and wore me down! and she has a lovely nature, very gentle, the lady who grooms her says she is a star! they dont cast either which is a bonus and she is very good with other dogs and children but for some strange reason chases magpies out of the garden and eats the bread herself! even tho she doesnt really like bread!You can take her for really long walks or just shorter ones and she is happy I am really not a dog lover but am totally converted you should research these dogs too!
