Am trying to do my homework before new doggy (not puppy) comes - thank you to those who have humoured me with my millions of questions thus far Grin

So - how often do you do the following to your dog, and what type of dog have you got?

  1. Shampoo
  2. Groom
  3. Worm
  4. Flea treat
  5. Anything I have forgotten...

Ta very much in advance! TeacakeDog will be very appreciative :)

  1. Shampoo - only when he's landed or swam in something yukky or he gets groomed...
  1. ...which is 2-3 times a year and he gets a brush every couple of weeks
  1. Worming every 6 months
  1. Rarely, he's never had fleas and he's nine!
  1. Claws, glands ear all get a once over when he's groomed, injection boosters once a year. Teeth when I remember but the vet is always saying this should be done really regularly. Frankly the smell of the meat flavoured toothpaste makes me want to barf!

I have a terrier who requires hand stripping, he has a fairly rough coat and doesn't tend to roll in things luckily.

I am a lab owner and I think my last one had 2 baths in his whole life. It upsets the natural oils and can make their skin bad, he was brushed once a week, our new pup gets Advocate once a month for parasites and fleas/ticks.

I have two different breeds which need very different grooming, so..

  1. Shampoo, Skyes twice a year, Yorkies once a fortnight.
  1. Groom, Skyes get brushed twice a week, Yorkies every day. Nails once a month.
  1. Every two months for the Skye. Never, unless obvious signs for Yorkies as both have problems with the drugs.
  1. Skyes get flea treatment every quarter. Yorkies never, bathing every fortnight keeps them clear, never had them.
  1. Teeth get Logic, or that grapefruit stuff(forgot the name) every day, bit of brushing when they're in the mood, odd bit of scraping (vet advised) as & when. Ears checked every week, cleaned if necessary, dew claws clipped.

I have a cocker/springer cross.

  1. Every 6 weeks or so, depending on general stench.
  2. Once-twice a week, depending on the length of his coat.
  3. Every three months. He's a snail cruncher.
  4. Every two months. We walk through woods and grasslands daily, so it's sensible.
  5. Ears checked daily (bog dwelling spaniel). Haven't ever cleaned his teeth, but give him raw carrots to munch a few times a week.

Teeth! That's the other thing I meant to ask about!

Teacake, with a new dog (or cat) I have always taken it to the vet within the first few days just for a quick checkover. This also gives you the chance to talk to the vet about which flea treatment etc you want to use.

Grooming really depends on the dog. My husky/mal x never needs a bath, but needs brushing several times a day during the shedding season. My herding dog with long hair needs a brush once or twice a week to stop the fur getting matted, and regular baths depending what he's rolled in lately.

  1. Shampoo - Once/twice a month, depending where we walk and how muddy they get.
  1. Groom - Lab ; once/twice a month, Collie ; 3-4 times a month
  1. Worm - Every 6mths for both
  1. Flea treat - Every 3mths
  1. Anything I have forgotten... (Feed & walk twice a day)

Shampoo - Generally only after rolling in fox shit. Boy wolf has to have a bath before shows though which can be once or twice a month in the summer (he's mostly white).

Groom - Every other day. They don't matt or tangle but shed heavily and so to save my carpet I brush them outside often.

Worm and flea - I use Advocate spot-on but not every month as suggested, just four times a year. Both are few raw meat including wild rabbit/pheasant/duck/venison and have never produced a worm yet.

Claws are done once a month in summer, don't need doing in winter as they're running on hard packed trails. Teeth never as their diet means they are naturally free of plaque.

They are Siberian huskies, they are high maintenance only in the exercise stakes, in terms of care they're hardy as anything.

My bog addicted labradors are bathed usually once a week, the smell otherwise is something else. Groom them very infrequently, the hair comes out in the bath. Puppy likes snails so has advocate every month (does fleas and worms), big dog is wormed and de-flead once every three months. Never brushed teeth Blush and boosters every 3 years.
