Help! Dog howls when baby cries.

Just got dog home after he's had a week away while we had a baby.

He's howling everytime the baby cries, and doesn't stop for ages after.

He's never howled before, hardly ever barks indoors or even whines.

What can I do??

Congratulations!

If you can bear it I would ignore and the second that the dog pauses treat. So you are treating the calm behaviour. (although I can imagine you have your hands full with newborn) Alternatively just put him in another room and ignore let him back in when he is quiet. He will get used to it but I can imagine that is all you need right now a howling dog along with your sleepless nights.

Our dog did for the first 2-3 nights (god rest her soul) but then she settled down. She was just joining in! Not great for the neighbours, granted , but hopefully yours will settle down too. What sort of dog is it?

herbertjane · 10/07/2012 16:15

fridgeraidersGrin isn't that a typical reply from the doghouse "what sort of dog is it" We should be asking about the BABYGrin

Congratulations on the new baby!

Fridge raiders is right, he is just joining in.
My lot don't do it much now but my old ones used to. They had quite a set chorus, each coming in on cue with a real melody, not sure it was top ten material though.
I'd just get him to sit, quietly, before he gets into full throttle & praise him hugely for being quiet.

He's a springer. 1 year old. Glad to hear it's normal! You can imagine trying to change a screaming infant, with toddler 'helping', all accompanied by the sound of a howling dog! Hope it's short lived. I'll get DH to treat when calm if he can.

Thought I'd update. He hasn't howled since I last posted (and the baby has certainly cried!). Must be getting used to it!

I think I prefer howling to crying...
