Rescue Dogs

DDs are very keen to have a dog. We are a dog-loving family but have not had a dog for a few years. Anyway, we would like to take in a rescue dog and do not know how to go about finding a rescue centre within travelling distance. Is there a website or something? We live up North.

There are many rescues that would be delighted to help you find a gorgeous dog. There are several ways of approaching your search. If you are looking for a general all breed rescue in your area, then start with Google and type in "dog rescue UPNORTHTOWN" to give a list of your local rescues.

National rescues such as the Blue Cross, Retired Greyhound Trust, Dogs Trust have rehoming centres all over the UK. Again, go to their website, and you can type in your postcode and be directed to the centre nearest you. DT also have searchable lists of dogs needing homes too so you can have a look at what they have.

If you are interested in a particular breed, say Great Danes, then type in Great Dane Rescue and a list of rescue charities will come up. Many of the single breed charities are national so will rehome all over the UK.

You can also go to a great website called Dogsblog here which is a tailor made service for you - you type in what you want and they can send you emails of new rescue dogs, and you can browse by area/type of dog etc. Well worth a look.

Once you are shortlisting rescues, take a look at the Rescue Review website which gives feedback from adopters on different rescues - v useful.

There are lots and lots of rescue volunteers on here who will be very happy to answer any questions you might have about dog adoption.

remember to install into your dds that any dog you take on will be on trial, and you will keep trying new dogs until you find one that suits your family,

it sometimes takes a few goes before you find the right dog,

google your local RSPCA rescue and they will be happy to give you numbers of other centres locally to you,

make sure you go equipped with list of essential qualities and stick to it, so you don't distracted by something that will not really suit you.

If you're anywhere near Durham: Adopt a Dog North East. Run by my friend, dogs are fostered in the home and not kennelled. :)

Many tears.co.uk - they are based inWales but have dogs fostered all over UK. Google RSPCA and Dogs Trust, there are probably local Greyhound rescue centres as well that will come up, as mentioned in previous posts. Dogsblog is good too but not kept updated, so you might see a dog on it but when you go direct to the site, it's been rehomed already. Google something like "rescue dogs north east" and i'm sure loads of info will come up. Once you've found a rescue, even if they haven't got a suitable dog, you can discuss your needs with them and you can get home checked, then they'll contact you if they get one that they think will suit you. Dog Watch UK is another one that comes to mind...good luck!

If you fancy a big daft beautiful golden retriever who is very sweet and gentle, about eighteen months old, then I have a smashing dog who is living with me just now. He is just adorable, housetrained and devoted to people and chewy bones. His name is Cassidy , he's being rehomed through Irish retriever rescue , a great organisation, and is a dog to be proud of. He's not perfect, but then who is? he was rescued from Ireland last year , and he would fit into all sorts of homes but needs someone to be around most of the time - he loves company.
You can find IRish retriever rescue via google , they will do home checks etc etc, and I can give anyone interested some more details. I will miss him massively but he will make someone else very happy.

Both in the NE and very, friendly. They also have more dogs than they have advertised on their site, so if you don't see any that you take a liking to, they're worth contacting anyway. GG works solely with foster homes. SOS uses a mix of kennels and foster homes but most of the dogs live with the owner of the rescue.
