Patterdale Terrier with possible tick paralysis. Can anyone advise?

Hi. i have a 6 year old Patterdale Terrier cross, and he was recently infected with what looked like ticks. we took him to the vets who sent them off for analysis, and when the results came back, we were told that it was a very unusual kind of tick, which only affected the left side of his body, and usually only attached to foxes (!)
Anyway, antibiotics cleared it up for a week or two, and then a few days ago they came back, but not as many as last time.
Today he started limping, and seemed to lose balance on his front and back left paws. He's been really struggling to walk and can't get upstairs or jump onto anything (and normally he's a very jumpy active dog)
Tonight he's just laid down and not really moved much. When he does walk he's still limping, and occasionally (although not always) when I touch him or pick him up, he whimpers.
I have him booked in at 10am at the vets, and have phoned the emergency vet, who says I can take him in if I wish. but can also wait until morning. I've managed to scare myself by googling, and realised that it's silly, but I wondered if anyone here has any advice or experience in this. I'm really worried in case he gets worse through the night, as it seemed to come on quite quickly this afternoon.

sorry for the long post...but I am just a little worried, and any advice will be gratefully received.
Thank you
