Syringomyelia

I'm due to look after a 2 year old KCK for a year whilst his owner is away. The owner has just found out the dog might have Syringomyelia. However the dog seems quite happy at the moment.

How quickly does this disease take hold and what we be likely to expect to happen within in a year? Is it possible the dog might be able to live a happy life even with SVS? Thanks.

Sorry if the last sentence sounds dippy! Obviously if he has full blown SVS he won't be having a happy life but just wondered if there are degrees of it which are manageable and how soon it takes hold?

There is loads of info on the internet about SM - here is a link as an example
www.thecavalierclub.co.uk/health/syringo/syringom.html

Sorry if that is not much of a reply to your specific question but I guess it just depends; I think some dogs go downhill pretty quickly but others can be fine on medication. Presume the owner is going to keep insurance going and cover any medical costs?

I think in many cases SM can be managed very well so hopefully you will have a lovely year with this dog Smile

Thank you for the link and reply- that's really helpful. I will ask the owner about insurance.

Yes the owner is going to keep all the medical/insurance costs going.
