Staffie chewing

Ideas please - Dudley is 9m old rescue with lots of toys of his own. Now I know Staffies chew but really he is taking it to an extreme sport.

Today alone he has consumed:

I toy dodo
2 shoes (different pairs naturally)
1 letter
1 lead
2 pieces of material
1 oven glove

It's costing me a fortune !

He has had a long walk today, a play in the garden, company for 99% of the day - I am 7m pregnant so struggling to do more - ideas please ????

Put things away out of his reach and supervise, so when he does get something that isn't his, you can call him to you and swap for something of his. Hard though it is, don't chase after him to get things back he's not meant to have as it will make him more likely to 'steal' things to entice you into a game.

Good point on the game - and having a stock of his toys - thanks - he is just taller than last dog and I am a bit slow on the uptake

Our staffy did (still does sometimes) this. We did as others mentions supervise, reduce the temptations. And bones. I feel have helped. I get him a huge cut off from butcher for £1. Depending on size lasts 2 weeksish. But have also used the plastic edible bones you can get from pet shops. Can be expensive but really kept him busy and lasted a good while. Our staffy is just over 1 now and is loads better. As i said he still does sometimes, but it tends to be plastic bottles and cardboard boxes which i personally am not too fussed over.

Oooo teething and the idea that it might just be cos he is little gives me hope - will try the bone and also have frozen his chewy kong with yummy things in it ( well it would work for DS who is also teething) - thanks all - I will keep the supervision up

Definitely gets better

Our retriever/staffy cross chewed anything he could get his paws on, but is much much better at just over a year old. He rarely bothers with shoes (and this was the dog who finally forced me to find a cupboard to tidy kids' shoes into!) and knows the difference between 'mine' and 'yours'.

He will only steal something thats not his when he wants to provoke a game - so midori is totally right! Bones do help a lot, and he's chewed less since on raw food (even though his raw food is minced up).

They do a toy in Pets At Home, its called a Kong,its made of rubber and has a cavity you fill fill with treats or biscuits.
It is quite hard for dog to get contents out to eat so keeps them amussed for ages as dog will chew and chew until he gets the treats out

Ok- so now he has worked out how to open draws !!!! Taking all your advice I went for the extra vigilance approach and put all beloved items in an ikea storage system- he has clearly developed the ability to both levitate and use a opposable thumb when I am not looking . Seriously thank you for the tips (wanders off muttering "it's only a phase , it's only a phase ")

Two words: Black Kong!

Mine chewed a lot at that age. He mostly did it through boredom but I vaguely remember teething. If you're not able to walk with him for too long he will definitely get tired out with training games. One of our favourites is guess which hand the treat's in/paw but as he's so young you'll be able to teach him loads of fun things!

My lovely staff was never really a chewer she was a nibbler :)
Zips on jackets, cushions etc.
Jewels off flip flops, bags. you name it!
The little rubber bits off the end of hair grips :) Now that's her favourite!
She is 11 btw :) even now if we go out for a evening to the pics or a meal, she sometimes feels annoyed that we have done so will take her anger out on certain nibbely things!
She's very good at doing this and does a very neat job

Black kongs and nylabones give our staff the ability to work her jaws on something safe.

He is not a levitating dog - hurrah - I caught ds (18m) waddling to shoe draw and feeding staffy with shoe ! Mystery solved and kongs abound in the house - thanks again!!
