My mother's dog humps her ..... From about eight feet away

She maintains complete eye contact with my mother's leg, and then humps the air in the vague direction of it, from the other side of the room.

Now obviously this is hilarious to watch, but what the hell is going on in the dog's head?

Our old dog (also female) went through a stage of this after being spayed (although usually facing the wall - not making eye contact!). I seem to remember she just grew out of it! Has the dog been spayed recently? I think it sends their hormones a bit hay wire for a while
