Been to vets for worming etc today and they td me royal canon veterinary is the best for doggy as has special vits etc in and it's not same as the one you can buy in pet shops so being impulsive I ordered £51 bag to collect tomorrow and will wean him off of the burns over next week. I am now unsure if I have done the right thing as burns has good reviews everywhere oh silly me

Royal Canin is crap. The vets get commision on it and that is why they sell it to you. It's not the worst crap you can buy, but it's certainly no better than Burns. If you're prepared to pay £50 a bag, have you looked at Fish4Dogs? My Goldens do very well indeed on it and it doesn't contain any cereals at all.

Got it through the vet I doubt it am so peed off about it I trusted them. I want the very.best for him

Could I mix (once off of burns ) with f4d until I've used it up??

To be fair, I think our vet nurse believed what she was saying - based on £=quality, no doubt

I mixed it with raw food until it was gone, so as not to waste it - no complaints from Mouse!

Yes, you can mix it.

But it is really mediocre quality food packed up and sold as premium food. I have no doubt the vets believe it is good food but vets aren't IME terribly good on dog food/nutrition/allergy stuff.

Is there any reason you are weaning off Burns? It's pretty good stuff - but then so is Fish4dogs which mine are all on too and they're all looking rather lovely, tbh.

I agree your vets probably have the best intentions. They don't always know that much about canine nutrition and will believe what Royal Canin tell them.

For years vets kept telling me raw feeding was 'risky' as was giving bones (a few agreed it was a good way to feed dogs) and recently I have found most vets seem to be agreeing it's a good idea. The vet I saw last time said there has been an awful lot about the benefits of raw feeding in all the veterinary journals recently....

our last thing of royal canin went in the bin...return unopened!

the merest trace in Hound of Poes dinner resulted in the dreaded squits. we got the bag from my mum whose dogs had the same reaction

Was put off of Raw feeding by various friends was all set to go down that root originally. Will stick to dry food just want the best I can get

Haven't got it yet am meant to pick it up in morning but paid on my card today will ring first thing am quite positive I don't want him having it now. Will sell on eBay if not lol

Burns is Ok, but IIRC, it has about 30% meat content and contains rice. (except the pork and potato one which doesn't have rice) Fish4dogs has over 50% fish content and has no cereals in it, so IMO is better. I think they're around the same price.

We feed raw but always have a bag of Applaws when travelling and for training treats, it's 75% meat no cereal.

Orijen is another good food - I don't feed it, but know of a couple of people who do and they're happy with it.

Order some free samples if you're not sure; I really am happy with Fishy biscuits for mine, they look absolutely brilliant on it and I am v picky about what I feed my dogs. I'm not happy with raw feeding for mine - for a number of reasons so stick to a good quality dried complete.

I feed raw (so easy and dirt cheap!) but keep a bag of Orijen for emergencies. Dog loves it- no cereals at all, think 80% meat content. Anything with cereal makes my boys eyes runny, and poos horrid. Lent a bit to my mum who'd forgotten to buy dog food yesterday, she said her very spoilt whippets fell on it like a starving child in a Macdonalds.

I can really recommend csj dog food. Very well priced and contain herbs that prevent ticks and fleas. My dogs have lovely soft shiny coats and bags of energy. They have a fab dietician who has answered loads of my questions in the past and they give very generous free samples.

The dog treats they sell are awesome too.

Orijen is the only kibble my dog will occasionally deign to put near her mouth. That's when she's not snuck a mouthful of the cat's food

I was recommended this dog food analysis site Not sure how many brands are available in the UK though.

Could (should) I give him the occasional wet food??
