My poor dog - his time has come :(

He is a Stafford and almost 15 years old. He's the soppiest most loving dog we have ever had.

He has lost control of his bowels, he is getting skinnier by the day, he looks a picture of misery.

Vet appointment tonight, 4.40pm.

I'm so sad :(

I've had my dog longer than I've had my DD.

He once tried to protect me from an ex who was attacking me.

I love him so much, can't bear to be without him, but I know it's for the best :(

Be prepared for a good old sobbing session but be happy that you are doing the kindest thing for him and he won't suffer, he won't know it's going to happen or anything.

I don't suppose you would consider a replacement staffie in need of rescue from neglect.

See thread - need to something about the dog

Grrrr · 31/05/2012 12:04

Sorry, thread is "Really need to do something with the dog"

RetiredDJ · 31/05/2012 12:05

WoodRose · 31/05/2012 13:00

I am so sorry. I had to say good-bye to my wonderful 14 year old collie last week. It is really hard; but have confidence that you know it is time and you are letting him go with dignity. Our vet came to the house and I held my special boy in my arms as he went. It was very quick and peaceful. Sending you lots of hugs. XX

ditavonteesed · 31/05/2012 13:01

so sorry. xx

hattifattner · 31/05/2012 13:03

its horrible, but in your heart you know you are doing the right thing. Take tissues with you and don't be ashamed to have a good cry.

I think I cried for 3 days after my lovely girl went in Feb, and only now can I start thinking about replacing her (not that she can ever be replaced, but you know what I mean). Let yourself and your family grieve.

Scuttlebutter · 31/05/2012 13:07

So sorry, OP, this is always the hardest thing we have to do as dog owners. Sad Sending you best wishes, and hoping it all goes peacefully and well this afternoon. Give yourself plenty of time to grieve and hoping you've got some support and understanding around you. Please do come back if you want some extra support here. xx

thestringcheesemassacre · 31/05/2012 13:07

Thinking of you.
We had to have our dog PTS in February after a fast acting illness. We still have a tear once a week. It's really hard, take care of you.

tunafortea · 31/05/2012 13:13

Oh, I am sorry.
I had to do this with my spaniel 5 years ago and I still find it hard.
I actually went back to speak to the vet the next week (she looked a bit stunned) and sobbed all over her as I thought I had done the wrong thing. She was quite clear I hadn't .
It is still hard though.
It is very quick.
Thinking of you.x.

mumofjust1 · 31/05/2012 13:51

Thanks everyone for your kind words x

He has stopped drinking. We put a full bowl of fresh water out before we go to bed, this morning when we got up he had poo'd everywhere. Not normal poo either. He hadn't touched his water this morning.

Put a fresh bowl of water out before I went to work, he's not touched that either.

I'm dreading taking him - I've had palpitations and a horrible sickly feeling all day, but we have to do what's best for him.

Will let you know how we get on.

Thank you again - your words have really helped x

Thinking of you.
We made the decision for our goldie in September and even though it was the right thing to do at the right time and it was so gentle, it still makes me teary. Be kind to yourself and allow the grief to take it's time. Hugs and a big glass of wine.

MackerelOfFact · 31/05/2012 15:49

I'm so sorry. It's heartbreaking isn't it? You can tell when it's their time though. You are doing the kindest thing. :(

I don't want to give you false hope but his symptoms might be being exacerbated by a short-term virus or something and the vet might be able to suggest something to give him a little more quality time. But you will know what's best.

Thinking of you x

midori1999 · 31/05/2012 16:17

I'm so very sorry. Sad

I understand how heartbreaking it must be for you. Please be assured though that it is the kindest thing you can do for him now and you are making the right decision, it's our last responsibility as apet owner to make sure our animals are not allowed to suffer.

I know it doesn't help, but 15 is a great age for a Staffy.

MrsVamos · 31/05/2012 16:22

mumofjust1

I lost my girl last year, I'd had her longer than my DCs.

I know how you feel. Absolutely broken-hearted.

Just remember that you are doing the last, final thing you can for your lovely boy. He has had a lifetime of happiness with you, the kindest thing you can do for him is to let him go.

(((HUG)))

Rowgtfc72 · 31/05/2012 16:31

My jrt is fifteen and skin and bone, half blind, half deaf but thankfully still happy. Hoping I can be as strong as you when his time comes. Thinking of you x

wfrances · 31/05/2012 16:33
