Clipping claws...

My hound needs it done. I'm nervous of doing it!

What do you do if it bleeds? DH got the vet to show him how it was done but when he did it the claw bled. We've been grinding them up until now but it's only been taking the edges off and I think they just need a good clip.

Most of his nails are black, so we can't see the quick.

Tips, anyone?

Get yourself some quickstop, likely get it from ebay if you don't know a grooming supplier. Use VERY sharp nail clippers, buy bigger than you think you need as nothing as painful as small clippers and using loads of pressure on them to do the job. Take a little off at a time until you see a spot on the cut nail, that will be the very edge of the quick, if you go too far it will bleed and you will need to use the quickstop. Sometimes shinning a torch through a black nail will show the quick and it makes it a bit easier. If you do them regularly you will reduce the quick overtime for shorter nails :)

Ah, thank you! I think we'll have to get some high status treats ready to amuse the other end too!

Great idea with the torch too. Smile
