My bitch is now scent marking, sometimes with a cocked leg!

WTF?! She's 15 months and this has only started recently. Instead of doing one big wee on a walk, the first wee is quite short and then she will either squat or cock a leg over any good sniffs she finds on the walk and pee on those a tiny bit too. About 5 or 6 times in a half hour walk I would say.

It's definitely not a UTI, as she has free access to the garden all day through a dog door and she can go hours without needing a wee at home.

Is it some kind of teenagery testosterone surge or something?!

I think it's fairly common and nothing to be concerned about. My bitch always used to just do one or two proper wees on a walk but since adopting a neutered male she has copied from him how to cock a leg and will now mark several times on a walk. She was 2.5 years old and neutered long before he arrived so don't think it's anything hormonal, just habit.

Marking is one of the first signs of a season coming.

Dominant bitches do this - my first bitch was like this and now my current one is too. Watch out for other signs of dominance with other dogs and be firm with her if she displays it - with mine it's usually some little old lady's spaniel that she decides to boss around
