Has anyone rehomed a failed guide dog pup? Very interested...

I have just filled in my application form and it is waiting to be posted but am keen to know if anyone on here has done this. The dogs are generally between 12-18 months old. Or anyone who has knowledge or experience of rehoming an older labrador.

My friend works for guide dogs, they are really lovely dogs even when they don't qualify to be a guide dog. They make wonderful family pets. Good luck.

The best part is, they are pretty much already trained for you. They just weren't quite up to the standard of a guide dog. : )

i was thinking that myself. Housetrained, not too much chewing, polite dogs who don't qutie make the grade as guide dogs. Perfect!

Don't worry Crossed, I think Fenton is the exception to the rule. There are a few failed not-meant-to-be guide dogs in our 'hood. They're all lovely pets and impeccably behaved. Good Luck!

I've got one!
MadLab is a perfect pet even if he was too OTT to be a guide dog. Please do bear in mind that you will be getting a dog that has been selectively bred for intelligence. This can be a challenge. MadLab needs to be kept busy or he makes his own entertainment, he finds most dog toys a bit boring (figures out how to get the treat and then empties the toy in minutes or just breaks it to speed the process up), needs a lot of exercise and social interaction (just figured out that other dogs do not understand that when he gives them his ball, he expects them to roll it back to him)...
He's also the most sensitive dog I've ever had. When he needs a cuddle, he really needs a cuddle. Also, gets the hump if you tell him off and will avoid you for the rest of the day.

I met one who jumped up and pulled like a train on the lead. How much of this was down to the new owner and how much was the reason for failure, I don't know.

My parents adopted a retired guide dog (she was 10 yo but they knew her most of her life )

They had friends who walked puppies. One of their pups developed diabetes half way through training so it was debatable if it would qualify.
Luckily (for the dog) he was matched up with a retired doctor who took it all on board and did the injections.
Though now I wouldn't have thought a dog would fail for that reason alone.

Me! We got UnWiseDog2 two weeks ago and she is gorgeous. Really well trained and very soppy! Lovely not having to go through the toilet training and sleepless nights, too.

Am wondering OP, if you got your rehomed guide dog? And, how it all went? I'm thinking of applying as have been after an Autism Support Dog for my son (now 12) for years. They're in very short supply and the guide dog retiming was suggested by them.

Any news?
