I have 11 full free days coming up and am aiming to teach (will be) 19 week old golden retriever to wee etc in same area. How should I start, is this realistic. Any help would be fab thanks

I'd love to help but was rubbish with my now 9.5 month old cross poodle mongrel. It took us months to train her and she still won't pee in the garden...ever! I wish you well though...

Don't want to be patronising, but are you sure you want her to?

It'll very quickly be smelly. And if it's a grassy spot, the grass will wither and die very fast!

I have trained my pup to wee where I want her to, by placing newspaper down inside the house where I want her to go at night (we will lose this as she learns to hold all night) and I taught her to wee where I want her to outside by opening the door, letting her out and saying "do wee wee's", and once she has, praising to the skies, "GOOD girl, puppy".

She came to us at 9 weeks old, (she's now 14 weeks) knows to use the paper at night and goes to the door and scratches the door to be let out, if we don't notice her ! She realised within a few days to get to the door to go out, I think consistency and repetition is the key, also high praise once done, using pup's name.

I know that a lot of people don't recommend using newspaper as breeders do to get them to wee etc in a certain place, but it has been brilliant for us. She has only had 2 accidents, and they were our fault in the first week because we were playing and she got over excited.

Dead easy to do BUT can you do need to be consistent. All assistance dogs learn to wee in one place.

  1. For you benefit mark out an area where you want the dog to go.
  2. Regularly take the dog to the location, after meals, when they wake up etc and when they wee praise like mad. If they are puppies this is very easy to do as they wee and poo often. If you are training an older dog it will take longer as there are less opportunities to wee and poo. IF they do poo or wee in the wrong place blame yourself for not being vigilant enough and take more care to take them to the designated area.
