Following on from my other threads - we might be getting a cocker spaniel - advice please

We are going to see a cocker this week who is with a cocker spaniel rescue fosterer. The dog is 3 and has previously lived with kids (we have a 20m and 5 yr old). Hes been fostered for about 3 weeks we think.

What should I ask the fosterer?

If we are lucky enough to get him as our dog what can I do to make the transition easy for him?

Also, when we go see it tomorrow - should I take anything for it or anything??

maybe take something that smells of you so that if you end up adopting him he will be familiar with your smell. Also a pocket of doggy treats? . iI'd ask why he was handed in to rescue. I'd ask about any behaviouaral probs he may have, fear aggression, separation anxiety, housetraining issues etc. I'd ask if he is used to being left and for how long. I'd also want to know his current exercise requirments and how is recall is. Can't think of anything else at the mo! Hope that helps and good luck.

Hi. Nothing on a practical note to add that allergic hasn't already said but just wanted to say that we have a Cocker. He is 17 months now and is gorgeous. He stinks to high heaven, is greedy, scatty and follows me everywhere but we love him to bits and wouldn't be without him. He has the best nature and adores our two young children. He is very affectionate. They are a lovely breed. Good Luck

I took dog treats when I collected my dog, which was great because she completely ignored me until I produced them !

I'm a big fan of the adaptil collars. They last 4 weeks & made a massive difference to her settling in.

I would make sure you have the same food, ask times of eating & see if you can stick to a similar routine with regard to eating & walking. Also find out if he has a treat, like chewy/tripe/beef jerky strip after walk. Our dog would sit & wait patiently to no avail because the fosterer never told me she always had a treat.

Hopefully they'll have a soft cuddley toy for you to take. We had one & I kept it in the crate at night time.

I would also say start as you mean to go on wrt sleeping on beds/sofas etc.
