Depends on breed. I rarely bath mine they swim a bit and their coats are waterproof so I don't like to put products in them. I don't really groom them either as they just don't need it. I damp their coats if they've not been in water to help the curls but they don't show or anything so I think there's little need!

It really does depend on what breed he is and whether or not he's smelly. I don't wash dogs unless there has been a fox-poo rolling incident.

My dog is 12m and he has had a bath twice, both times because he was extra filthy. I wouldn't wash him unless he needed it. I do brush him regularly though, he is shedding a lot at the moment.

Thanks. He is a golden retriever

At 4 months he shouldn't be smelly unless he has been rolling, so just rub him down with a towel. I rarely bath my dog as it takes all the oil out of his coat. My friend baths her spaniel at least once a week and he is the stinkiest dog on the planet. I think his coat is getting oilier to balance out the washing (I have no idea if this is correct, but it would be logical)

Brushing is a good way of bonding, and getting your dog used to handling, which is useful for vet appointments.

I have a 2 yr old lab - never bathed her - just put her in the river if she is dirty .

A good brush aswell.

Mine are showered once per week in may and june (with water, but without shampoo) because ds2 gets bad hayfever and it helps to reduce the pollen count in the house. Other than that, they are showered only when they've rolled in something nasty.

Mine gets bathed and groomed every six weeks. He is a shih tzu.

When I had a spaniel, he got bathed more often because he got so muddy.

AllOverIt · 11/05/2012 17:17

My cocker gets showered off after a muddy walk, but only shampooed every 6 weeks or so during her trim. Unless she's particularly smelly, or filthy...
