Pointy hounds include-
Greyhounds (Grunds)
Whippets (Whippys)
Lurchers
Italian Greyhounds (Iggys)
Salukis
Afghans
And any others I have forgotten. If you are a new pointy hound owner, an old and experienced owner or looking into getting one of these fabulous creatures, come and have a seat (that's not taken up with a hound).

Share advice, stories and shopping tips!

I didn?t really want you,
I wasn?t really sure,
And I?ll admit I had my doubts,
When you first came through that door.

Not small, or cute, or fluffy,
With big, soft puppy eyes,
But tall, and thin, and bony,
With bald, pink, bulging thighs.

You weren?t the kind I had in mind,
Not in any way,
?Perhaps it would be better if I took you back today,
Before we know each other,
It really won?t be kind,
To keep you here for one more day,
And then to change my mind.?

But against my better judgement, I decided you could stay,
And quickly I discovered you were kind in every way,
Your gentleness and patience, they really stole the show,
?Why these dogs are wonderful, I must let others know!?

For you?re my gentle giant,
Who just needed the chance,
To show us all what you could be,
To wipe away that history,
And dispel our preconceptions, which put us all to shame,
And so we come to know and love,
What lies beneath that frame.

And now I?ve come to understand,
What I missed right at the start,
That greyhounds need that great deep chest,
To house their great big hearts!
:)

That is one picky hound Grin

Thank you for the daily chicken wing tip (not a picky hound here), I'm giving him one at lunchtime instead of his usual meal and his poos are much firmer. It's helping with my plan to cut his food down before he's castrated, don't want him getting chubby.

He seems to love all the sunshine, he's been basking in the garden today, he didn't want to come in so I put his bean bag outside and he looked supremely happy Grin

Mmm hmm, you remember rightly Scuttle.

Billy's going out with a dog walker on Thursday as there's a school trip and it's all day. The walker is lovely, really knowledgeable and gentle with him and has asked for his chip details, vets emergency number etc etc but... she walks her dog at the same time. They've met when out and about and he's been fine with her dog as long as she doesn't bother him. However, when the walker came to pick up the keys today, her dog came in with her and Billy went crazy. I knew he'd have issues so I gated him in the kitchen while she was in the hall. I've never seen him so angry. I had to put him outside in the garden just so we could finish the admin stuff. Sad

She was cool with it and said she'd get her friend to come with her and hold her dog outside down the street while she came in and fetched him but I'm worried now... I do hope it works out as she is lovely and I trust her absolutely.

MissBetsyTrotwood · 15/05/2012 18:55

We've asked friends before but as it's a work day no one's available...

Scuttlebutter · 15/05/2012 23:54

Hi Betsy, I've seen this before with one of ours. Very territorial about the house, and protective, but fine if meeting outside the home - no bother at all. Hope it goes well. Finding a good dog walker or someone to help on those sorts of days like school trips is invaluable. Our weakness is our fondness for Wagner - a man who didn't believe in "less is more" when it comes to writing operas. Grin Accordingly I need a bladder of steel, a bottom of memory foam and a dog sitter!

MissBetsyTrotwood · 16/05/2012 07:13

I imagine Ring Cycle can really test those pelvic floor muscles!

Good to know we're not the only ones. He is very, very territorial now, and it extends to up and down the street outside the house too. He even barks at dogs on the other side of the road a few cars lengths each way from the gate. On one level, like with the dog walker, it's inconvenient but on another I'm glad it's a safe space for him that he wants to guard.

TheCunnyFunt · 16/05/2012 16:31

Sprocket just coughed and a fly flew out his mouth Confused or at least it looked like it did anyway.

Betsy Billy should be fine with the dog walkers dog, MIL has a spaniel, and her friend has a boxer, if either of these dogs went into the others house, the one that lived there would go crazy! But on walks together they are best buddies!

Sprocket has a wonky toe on his back left paw which means the claw on that toe doesn't touch the floor. I had a look at it yesterday and it was like an eagles beak! Jill popped round yesterday to pick up a cushion for the dogs and I asked her if she could clip this claw for him. She was very impressed by his coat, she said he's in very good condition :) [proud]

Scuttlebutter · 16/05/2012 19:02

Cunny, Andy eats flies too! I bet you were proud when she said about Sprocket's coat. Grin Of course, he's preparing for the wedding of the century....
Are you taking him to any shows this summer? Lots of rescues have them - they are great - very social, and lovely for kids too. Also, Blush I just feel ridicolously proud when a judge gives our darling a rosette - completely soppy. Usually it's our nephews - they love it and I go all soppy at the boys and the dogs - most embarrassing for DH, the boys and prob the hounds...

Betsy, yes it does!! We've got Tristan and Isolde at the end of the month though fortunately our lovely inlaws are coming over to hound-sit (usually referred to as the "grundparents"Grin).

MissBetsyTrotwood · 16/05/2012 19:19

Ha ha 'grundparents!'

He must be looking very dapper Cunny.

TheCunnyFunt · 16/05/2012 19:53

:o grundparents!

No I can't take him to the shows this year. They are having one but it's on 16th and 17th june and that's mine and DD's birthday weekend, 16th is my 21st, 17th is DD's 1st :)

BehindLockNumberNine · 16/05/2012 20:11

Oooh, I wish Sam had some grundparents... (although they would have to be pointyparents or whipparents which does not work too well...)

Cunny, I bet he is looking great - the loveable fly-eating grund!

We are hoping to take Sam to the RSPCA show this weekend, depending on what time dd is riding, what time ds needs dropping / collecting from a St Johns Ambulance training day and what the weather will do .

TheCunnyFunt · 17/05/2012 18:04

Sprocket really made me chuckle today, we were out on our walk and on the other side of the road was this fluffy yappy thing that was "barking" at Sprocket, Sprocket just shot it a really filthy look and ignored it :o

MissBetsyTrotwood · 17/05/2012 18:13

To quote the dog walker (I luf her) "Billy appreciates mutual ignoring when it comes to other dogs." She has him down and will be taking him out again. Costs a blardy arm and a leg though - 15 quid! So not on a regular basis.

MissBetsyTrotwood · 17/05/2012 18:14

Good on Sprocket too. Those canine underclasses are to be kept at arm's length. Grin

LostInWales · 18/05/2012 16:43

Grundparents sound brilliant, whippety goes to his Aunties and plays with his brother when I'm at work. Brother looking a bit sad today though as he had 'the' op. At least next time we go round his willy won't get stuck out. Grin My baby goes next Friday Shock trying not to think about it.

Uck to fluffy yappy things, although I did have a rather lovely cuddle with a huge poodle at the vets, proper coat though, none of that faffing around.

TheCunnyFunt · 18/05/2012 16:51

Poodles are ace :o I'm trying to persuade DP we should get a poodle one day, I stroked one in the petshop once, it felt like what I imagine a sheep would feel like after it's had a good bath and brush.

Tbh, I'd really love a chihuahua, not because I like them, but because I'd look hilarious walking a massive hound and a tiny rat thing together. It makes me laugh just thinking about it! A greyhound from LGT was rehomed with a chihuahua not long ago :o

MagratGarlik · 18/05/2012 17:58

I'd love a bedlington x whippet as my next dog (Hmm, the house is full, but still I can dream)- I think they just look lovely and a little bit scruffy.

MissBetsyTrotwood · 18/05/2012 18:44

German Shepherd's my 'next' dog

MissBetsyTrotwood · 18/05/2012 18:44

Ah, we've met a Bedlington on our walks. A three legged one - lovely.

MissBetsyTrotwood · 18/05/2012 20:38

Sheeeeeesh... Our builder just came around to collect a cheque. Billy was at the door before it even knocked, looking out of our front window and going absolutely crazy. Growling, barking, baring his teeth, the works.

We've known our builder for years and he's been in the house loads.

Billy eventually calmed down and I gave the builder a piece of chicken liver to treat him with, to calm things down a bit and create a bit of love. Billy took it, calm and gentle as you like and approached him for a little fuss. Builder went outside, got a few bits, came in again from the garden and the dog started up again.

The only time he's ever barked at someone else was at our neighbour's son when he was over for the evening. Confused
