Pointy hounds include-
Greyhounds (Grunds)
Whippets (Whippys)
Lurchers
Italian Greyhounds (Iggys)
Salukis
Afghans
And any others I have forgotten. If you are a new pointy hound owner, an old and experienced owner or looking into getting one of these fabulous creatures, come and have a seat (that's not taken up with a hound).

Share advice, stories and shopping tips!

I didn?t really want you,
I wasn?t really sure,
And I?ll admit I had my doubts,
When you first came through that door.

Not small, or cute, or fluffy,
With big, soft puppy eyes,
But tall, and thin, and bony,
With bald, pink, bulging thighs.

You weren?t the kind I had in mind,
Not in any way,
?Perhaps it would be better if I took you back today,
Before we know each other,
It really won?t be kind,
To keep you here for one more day,
And then to change my mind.?

But against my better judgement, I decided you could stay,
And quickly I discovered you were kind in every way,
Your gentleness and patience, they really stole the show,
?Why these dogs are wonderful, I must let others know!?

For you?re my gentle giant,
Who just needed the chance,
To show us all what you could be,
To wipe away that history,
And dispel our preconceptions, which put us all to shame,
And so we come to know and love,
What lies beneath that frame.

And now I?ve come to understand,
What I missed right at the start,
That greyhounds need that great deep chest,
To house their great big hearts!
:)

Hurrah! Love at first sight! And well done Andy. Grin

TheCunnyFunt · 14/07/2012 22:37

Blimey Scuttle that was quick! How are they all getting on together? Judging from your FB she seems to like swimming :o can she climb stairs then?

Saw this on AIBU, just had to steal it.

10 Things Your Dog Would Tell You.... (This made me cry)

  1. My life is likely to last 10 to 15 years. Any separation from you will be painful: remember that before you get me.
  2. Give me time to understand what you want of me.
  3. Place your trust in me- it is crucial to my well being.
  4. Do not be angry at me for long, and do not lock me up as punishment.
  5. You have your work, your entertainment, and your friends. I only have you.
  6. Talk to me sometimes. Even if I don't understands your words, I understand your voice when it is speaking to me.
  7. Be aware that how ever you treat me, I will never forget.
  8. Remember before you hit me that I have teeth that could easily hurt you, but I choose not to bite you because I love you.
  9. Before you scold me for being uncooperative, obstinate,or lazy, ask yourself if something might be bothering me. Perhaps I might not be getting the right food, or I have been out too long, or my heart is getting to old and weak.
10. Take care of me when I get old; you too will grow old. Go with me on difficult journeys. Never say: "I cannot bear to watch" or "Let it happen in my absence." Everything is easier for me if you are there, even my death. Remember that I love you

That is lovely Cunny.

The idea of point 5 is something the dog trainers I go to often emphasise: talk to your dog when they are doing stuff well, not just when they do stuff wrong, otherwise they might feel the only way to get interaction they get is when they do something "wrong".

MagratGarlik · 15/07/2012 00:29

Sorry, just read that again, I meant point 6 in my last post.

Scuttlebutter · 15/07/2012 08:39

That's lovely, Cunny, and very very true.

We talk all the time to ours Blush - quite involved conversations too, at the moment mainly about the Tour. Boola has become quite an expert on the unfolding Green Jersey competition.

Our lovely girl spent a very peaceful night. She started it on a sheepskin in our bedroom (where Booty used to sleep) then decided in the middle of the night to hop up on the bed and snuggle in between us. Grin So woke this morning and had a lovely cuddle.

MissBetseyTrotwood · 15/07/2012 20:17

How was today Scuttle ? How is Andy taking it? I love that she got in bed for a cuddle this morning.

Scuttlebutter · 15/07/2012 22:06

Hi Betsey, Andy seems fine, very chilled and happy. No problems at all today. A couple of minor wee accidents, she's mostly there with the housetraining, but not quite 100%, but I think that will come in a couple more days. She supervised me doing a batch of ironing and joined the other two in some serious snooze time this afternoon. We had a lovely walk this morning and stopped off at PAH to get her a tag. I had a little browse this afternoon on some collar sites Blush and more sensibly, have been looking up some local dog training classes. Basically,it's been a very happy, relaxed day. She's a lovely little girl, so affectionate, and waggy, and SO full of mischief. We are really going to have some fun with her, I think....

Oh, and she enjoyed watching the Tour highlights this evening... Grin

LostInWales · 16/07/2012 09:43

She looks so beautiful on FB Scuttle Smile glad she has taste and is enjoying the tour too. What a day yesterday, some people are pure bred idiots that's for sure.

That 10 point post is heartbreaking, (she says with her whippet cuddled up wrapped in a post rainy run towel on her knee like a baby). I don't like anything that points out he will in all probability die before me Sad plus I feel guilty enough about leaving him at home when I go out as it is! We've got a three week holiday booked and even though he is going to stay with his brother I feel terrible about leaving him. Next year we will book a dog friendly holiday (this hol booked by my mum about 18 months ago)

TheCunnyFunt · 16/07/2012 10:19

I'm so angry Angry my dad and sister bred their boxers last year and the pups arrived in september, my dad owns the bitch, he kept one puppy, sold 4, and now 3 of them are up for sale for being destructive in the home :(

MissBetseyTrotwood · 16/07/2012 11:19

Oh no Cunny that's horrible. How do you know?

I know Lost. We're having heebie jeebies about putting Billy in kennels for three weeks over the Olympics and our holiday. Point 1 makes me all tearful. He won't like it here but at least I know he won't be terrified by low flying helicopters, fireworks, random people shouting in the street at night. I also don't know how it's going to work out for us, given that we can't go to the supermarket, get online shopping deliveries or have the option of well stocked local shops - they can only make their deliveries between 12 and 4 am and the local wholesalers might not even be open! And he won't like camping... It was bad enough for just a week, let alone 3! They're building a last minute path over the Marshes too (because people coming to the Olympics can't walk on grass Hmm ) so that was all diggers and stuff this morning. Still enjoyed zoomies though. Smile

TheCunnyFunt · 16/07/2012 14:46

Saw my dad yesterday and he told me. I knew this would happen, they were ready to go to their new homes around the end of November, but 3 of them didn't actually leave until christmas eve :(

LostInWales · 16/07/2012 20:48

Cunny Sad, what an absolute shame. I can't believe people actually give dogs for Christmas still, what idiots.

Posting from an iPad which is odd. I am baby-sitting so have three different children upstairs to usual and a blue whippet curled up on my knee instead of my fawn one. Different house but not much else has changed!

MissBetseyTrotwood · 16/07/2012 20:52

Even my 5yo knows not to ask for pets for birthdays or Xmas. How do your Dad/Sister feel about it? Would they take responsibility for the pups/teen dogs now?

MissBetseyTrotwood · 16/07/2012 20:52

Ha ha Lost. Bit like a sort of parallel universe!

LostInWales · 16/07/2012 21:36

With better behaved children thank goodness!

TheCunnyFunt · 16/07/2012 21:41

I don't think they care tbh. My dad lives on a canal boat and it's a squeeze with 2 adults, a 5yo and 2 boxers. The pup my dad kept is destructive too. My dad actually laughed as he was telling me they are up for sale :( my sister has no time for the dad let alone his offspring. My dad actually advertised his pup on FB as he and mum were fighting constantly, so I commented on his ad and told him a few facts about where he could end up so if he absolutely had to go, to try a rescue. He never commented back to me and it's not been mentioned since and this was about 2-3 months ago so hopefully he's staying now.

The only reason they were bred is because my dad read something about boxer bitches going 'funny' if they hadn't had a litter by 6yo Hmm

TheCunnyFunt · 17/07/2012 18:29

Sprocket really makes me laugh :) if ever a dog lab size or bigger barks and growls at him, he does his 'hard man act' and does it back to them, but if a little dog barks and growls at him he just goes Hmm and doesn't give it a second glance :o

dozing in front of the Tour on tv, wallowing in the last hour of peace before the children (and husband Shock) are home for 6.5 weeks. Lovely run on the beach this morning. Met a beautiful Doberman and super lovely rescue Grey, she was a sweetie.

Scuttlebutter · 19/07/2012 14:18

Our adorable new foster girl is continuing to have a wonderful time with us. Yesterday morning, on our walk, she decided to launch herself into the lake to make friends with the swans. Shock Andy and Boola were both horrified - they have both learned to treat the swans with a great deal of wary respect. Fortunately, she was on the lead, so it just meant she got a bit soaked. Actually, it reminded me of the bit in one of the Harry Potter books when one of the first years gets terribly excited about the giant squid in the lake at Hogwarts and jumps in. Grin

She is now also officially sleeping on the bed. Actually, while DH is away, it's great. She snuggles in next to me and is very warm, and it's lovely to wake up to her pretty face. Note how I'm appreciating her warming qualities even though it's July - harumph, harumph..

In the afternoon I met up with two special friends (both also involved with rescue) and in one case, her amazing Iggy. I have now officially received a dose of Iggy love, and it's damn fine. What particularly impressed me is that she bounces on to the back of an armchair and uses this as a launch pad, so you find yourself wearing an iggy, rather like a combo of a parrot or one of those funny fur stoles elderly great aunts would wear in my childhood. Once she's wrapped round your neck, she sort of perches and you get an occasional affectionate lick or nuzzle. It was lovely. Smile

Scuttlebutter · 19/07/2012 14:20

Lost, I'm about to embark on my afternoon's Tour Fest - just finishing some stuff upstairs first. Smile

Scuttlebutter · 19/07/2012 14:21
TheCunnyFunt · 19/07/2012 14:31

Oooh people!

Scuttle are you sure she's pure greyhound? I'm thinking maybe a grandparent was a fish of some kind as she seems to be a water loving greyhound! Shock I think you need to scrutinise her family tree. Wasn't it one of the Creevey brothers that falls in the lake or something and the squid picks him up and puts him back in the boat?
Iggy love sounds lovely! And so ingenius to climb up the chair and sneak around your neck :) brilliant!

MissBetseyTrotwood · 19/07/2012 14:35

Mmm, I have an impending sense of... something about the summer holidays too!

DS2 has his birthday party tomorrow pm and FIL has, stone the crows, volunteered to a.) dress up as a pirate and b.) after all jobs piratical have been completed, to take Billy out for a walk. I nearly fell over when he offered. He even said he'd take his bed, food and water out to our car and sit with him in there with the paper until the hoardes of 4yos have departed! OMFG, Billy has worked his subtle, 'love me' magic on Captain Stoneheart of I Hate Dogs Land. They can be grumpy old men together.

Sorry, I'm feeling a bit whimsical. Just found out I have an unconditional offer of a place on a Postgrad in Special Educational Needs and Inclusion. First step on my way back to workdom I hope. A wee celebration tonight I think. Grin

And YY to the lab thing cunny. Grin

MissBetseyTrotwood · 19/07/2012 14:37

ROFL @ the Iggy scarf. Here's to hoping the grunds don't get any ideas...

Swans are terrifying so Andy and Boola are v sensible imo. I wonder if she's seen water before?
