Pointy hounds include-
Greyhounds (Grunds)
Whippets (Whippys)
Lurchers
Italian Greyhounds (Iggys)
Salukis
Afghans
And any others I have forgotten. If you are a new pointy hound owner, an old and experienced owner or looking into getting one of these fabulous creatures, come and have a seat (that's not taken up with a hound).

Share advice, stories and shopping tips!

I didn?t really want you,
I wasn?t really sure,
And I?ll admit I had my doubts,
When you first came through that door.

Not small, or cute, or fluffy,
With big, soft puppy eyes,
But tall, and thin, and bony,
With bald, pink, bulging thighs.

You weren?t the kind I had in mind,
Not in any way,
?Perhaps it would be better if I took you back today,
Before we know each other,
It really won?t be kind,
To keep you here for one more day,
And then to change my mind.?

But against my better judgement, I decided you could stay,
And quickly I discovered you were kind in every way,
Your gentleness and patience, they really stole the show,
?Why these dogs are wonderful, I must let others know!?

For you?re my gentle giant,
Who just needed the chance,
To show us all what you could be,
To wipe away that history,
And dispel our preconceptions, which put us all to shame,
And so we come to know and love,
What lies beneath that frame.

And now I?ve come to understand,
What I missed right at the start,
That greyhounds need that great deep chest,
To house their great big hearts!
:)

Ahh ok, it's really annoying because Sprocket has 1 claw that twists weirdly so it doesn't touch the floor. So it doesn't get ground down while he walks. It would be really silly to pay someone to clip just 1 claw Hmm

Scuttlebutter · 11/06/2012 13:46

If it's only one, and your vet nurse is nice, they might do it FOC when you are in there anyway for vax etc... Also, if you are in regular contact with kennels/rescue, they will probably have a clipper around the place, might be worth asking if you are popping in, doing a walk etc.

Boola has one of these - it is sort of twisted, and discoloured. The nail grows v slowly into a warped shape and every so often it falls out/gets knocked. Think it is the legacy of a racing injury where the nail bed got injured. Our nephews are fascinated, and they are a highly prized souvenir of visits Confused Grin

TheCunnyFunt · 11/06/2012 15:24

Sprocket is such a considerate dog. He's just done a poo, smack bang in the middle of a particularly prickly thistle Hmm I had to very carefully roll it off and onto the grass so I could pick it up. Thankfully it was a good sturdy one :o

I'll ring the vets in a bit, good idea!

LostInWales · 11/06/2012 17:08

Nice one Sprocket, I like to think when they do these things it's because we have been judged to have passed basic level pointy ownership and are ready for more challenging material Wink.

Whippety got a free paw clip when he was under the GA when he was neutered, I'm not sure I would be confident to do it myself, particularly the dew (? sp) claw. Do your pointys still have theirs?

Total moment of shame on the beach, turned around and he'd knocked an older lady over. I feel absolutely terrible but don't know what to do. I went straight over and was very apologetic, clipped him on the lead and helped her but she was cross and shocked and a little bit sore. We'd already gone miles to keep away from all the picnicers at the start of the beach and he was having the most amazing time running in the water with his brother but being good and recalling when there were dogs on the lead. I was so proud of him and then he must have not been looking where he was going. Do I need to keep him on the lead all the time Sad? It would be awful if so but he can't go around cannoning into people at high speed either.

TheCunnyFunt · 11/06/2012 23:48

Oh dear Lost, I hope she was ok! I shouldn't think you'll have to keep him on a lead, just be extra vigilant perhaps.

porn! Hope it works. It's not very good because I've just taken it in the dark :o I've included some of Sprocket and a rather funny one of a traveller horse.

How gorgeous!

LostInWales · 12/06/2012 08:30

Beautiful, congratulations Grin

TheCunnyFunt · 12/06/2012 08:57

Ok I just posted a better, less blurry picture :)

MissBetsyTrotwood · 12/06/2012 09:50

Oh, I love it - what a nice shape! Grin

TheCunnyFunt · 12/06/2012 11:54

Thank you :)

Scuttlebutter · 12/06/2012 12:23

Awww, that is absolutely gorgeous. I am now feeling all gooey and romantic - so lovely. Smile

I remember when I got mine, it taking a while to get used to the feel of it on my finger.

I thought Andy was being worryingly quiet earlier - I peeped in and he was playing with a tuna tin he'd retrieved from the recycling. He looked very happy though so I left him to it. Smile He and Boola have saved up their pocket money and got DH a little present for Father's Day Blush - a Game of Thrones mug for DH's tea.

Question for you all - looking for pointy related activities to do with DS (7 years) in or around SE London.

We've found Crayford Dogs and will be going to the races one Sunday morning as a birthday treat.

Ideally I'd like him to be able to witness something with an element of dog training involved. Or something that encourages my son to socialise with new people, esp fellow pointy lovers.

Can you help?

MagratGarlik · 12/06/2012 14:53

I don't know about pointy activities, but when I was still taking Whippetty to dog training classes, ds1 (also 7 years) would come with me, so that he learnt the same techniques for training the dog. I also found the classes had a nice social element in them too as everyone compared how their dogs were doing and generally talked dogs for an hour, in between excercises Grin. I think it helped.

Otherwise we take both of ours to lots of the rescue dog shows that are on at this time of year. The RGT often have stands there and also sometimes you find whippetty rescues at these things too. It helps ours in being comfortable around other (well-behaved, under-control) dogs - funnily we've never had a problem with either of them at one of those events, despite them meeting lots of other dogs, but we do have problems when they are approached by off-lead dogs with no recall elsewhere.

BehindLockNumberNine · 12/06/2012 16:02

Awww Cunny, I can't get your link to work Sad It keeps taking me to a 'welcome to flickr' page.

MissBetsyTrotwood · 12/06/2012 18:39

Our RGT kennels (Waltham Abbey - a bit of a way around the M25) has an open house every Sunday. It's normally well attended and you can walk your dog and take out another from the kennels for a leg stretch too! The kids get quite a lot of attention and there are pointies of all shapes colours and sizes.

I love the idea of a rescue dog show.

TheCunnyFunt · 12/06/2012 20:28

I was reading the classes for the LGT show this weekend, one of the greyhound only classes is 'baldest bum' :o

Lock I'm not sure why you can't see the pics, have you tried both lInks? There will be a pic of it up on FB on sunday so you'll definitely be able to see it then :)

TheCunnyFunt · 12/06/2012 20:31

Thanks Scuttle I know what you mean about getting used to it, it's weirder taking it off though, I can feel it then! That's lovely about Andy and Boola :o bless them, is ot something they do every year for christmas and birthdays then?

BehindLockNumberNine · 12/06/2012 20:31

Both links tried last night and again today. Both times both links take me to a welcome to flickr page. Sob.

Nope, sign in page again.... Sad

Scuttlebutter · 12/06/2012 21:10

Bochead, try Googling Charity Dog Shows in your area. We do these regularly with young nephews - classes like Best Rescue, Best Veteran, Best Child Handler. Nephew loves doing them, and has gained so much confidence and is chuffed to bits if he comes home with a rosette. I am doting Aunty/dog owner and stand at the ringside looking embarrassingly gooey/proud. They are also a great fundraiser for charities and are a comparatively cheap day out - most classes are usually £1 to enter so a few of those and a couple of icecreams and we all have a brilliant day out. With a lot of these, classes involving children pretty much guarantee a rosette. I've just taken delivery of a box of gorgeous rosettes for a charity show in September - every child in Best Child Handler will get a rosette (as well as the 1st to 6th placings), and usually make sure there are some extra ones for Best Rescue classes as well, as well as some extras for the other fun classes (like Sausage Eating Competition). Grin

Most grund rescues will also have other regular events - thinking of the ones in our area, we do regular greyhound walks (lovely for families), Easter egg hunts, fancy dress, Christmas events etc and our local all breed rescues also do lots of similar things, with quizzes, tea parties and all sorts of activities like "Have a go at Agility".

TheWombat · 12/06/2012 22:45

Is there room on the cushion for me? We've just put a deposit down on a gorgeous Italian Greyhound pup Smile. She's coming to us on 14th August. I can't wait! She is blue with a white tummy and white toes. If any of you have any IG puppy tips to throw my way I would be very grateful.

Name suggestions also gratefully received Grin.

MagratGarlik · 12/06/2012 23:09

Welcome!

Iggy's are just gorgeous and I think you will be the first on the cushion! She sounds lovely - I love the blue ones.
