Walking my Puppy

I am very lazy.. I know I should look this up but its easier to ask you, and you have always given me very sage advise!

Rafa will be 12 weeks old on saturday and it will be 2 weeks since his second set of jabs so he is ready to face the world.

The DC are looking forward to taking him out on a lead . Have I read somewhere or am I imagining it that I should only take him out for very short walks? Only he is constantly gambolling round the garden like a loon so I cannot imagine it is so we dont wear him out!

Advice please my Mumsnet mentors!

ps. Housetraining going fairly well, but he doesnt think the rules count if its raining!!!

Yup. Only short walks. About 5 mins per month of age, once a day, so 15 ish minutes at the moment.

It isn't set in stone, but it's a pretty good guideline to adhere to because puppies don't have an off switch and can over stimulate themselves v, v quickly. An over stimulated, over tired pup is no fun at all to have around. They will run on adrenaline for a very, very long time if you let them.

Agree with daisy. Little pups have delicate joints and you shouldn't put them under too much strain before the growth plates have fused (9-12 months old)

What breed is Rafa? I'm such a sucker for a puppy!

I learnt about the 5 minute per month thing on here too! It does seem a bit odd - 15 minutes is only once round the block for us, but funnily enough it does completely wear them out because they are seeing new things, meeting new people etc. DH still doesn't believe me, so our pup usually gets a short walk with me during the day, and then one with him later on once he's home from work.

Wizzler, your walks will probably take much longer as everyone will be stopping you to admire your adorable pup!
