Cairn terriers

Hiya, does anyone have this breed of dog, and allergies?

My friend has researched the kind of dog she wants for thefamily, spoken to breeders, vets and pet shops and decided on a Cairn or Tibetan terrier.

However, her eldest child (an older teen still living at home for now) has allergies to many things. However, some friends have other breeds of terrier and he is fine in their homes.

She would love to find someone nearby with a Cairn, so she can test his allergic reaction, if anyone.

So, does anyone live near Edinburgh and is willing to let her son snuggle their dog? Grin Failing that, does anyone know who hypoallergenice they really are?

Both my ds's have multiple allergies, but neither are allergic to dogs so it doesn't necessarily mean her teen will be either. Has he/she been tested for allergy to dogs?

So far as I am aware there are no "hypoallergenic" breeds of dog, as it is often not the fur that people are allergic to but the saliva amongst other things.

One thing she may want to consider though is that if the teen has hayfever and/or dustmite allergies a hairier breed like this may not be the best option as their fur will trap lots of pollen etc in it.

We have westies which are essentially white cairns. My husband is seriously allergic to dogs, they trigger his asthma as soon as he's in the room with one. Never had a problem with the westies. It's all to do with the amount of dander they shed, or don't shed in the case of westies/cairns.

We've got a cairn, and he's fab! I keep him clipped fairly short so they don't have to be left long and hairy! My friends dp has multiple allergies, and is ok with our dog.
We're about 250 miles north of Edinburgh, so not too handy for a trial, sorry!
