does this sound feasible with a young puppy (eg four to five months +): 5-6hr drive (could stop often) to relative's house, house is puppy proofed but they and their dog will be away? it's all still hypothetical, but just wondering if we did get a puppy in the next month or two whether we would be able to take up this offer of a free house and cheap UK hol this summer. I suppose it would limit how much we could get out a lot.

We did it when mine was 4 months in a rented cottage, no problem at all!

Ditto here. Last summer, 4 months old (just!) and a rented cottage in Devon. Massive enclosed garden - was wonderful. There were plenty of things we could still do with a dog - google dog-friendly Britain for pubs and restaurants that allow them.
