Dog food recommendations please!

I've been feeding my 16 week old Welsh terrier Pedigree Chum puppy food since we got him. The breeder started the pups on this so I just carried on - TBH at first I was just relieved it was something easily available and quite cheap! However, I've been reading here and elsewhere that people don't think much of Pedigree Chum, so please can I have your recommendations? Many thanks

Someone once told me that giving dogs Chum was like us living on cakes and chocolate - and just as expensive. My dog ate half a tin of dog food, with leftovers - like rice, pasta etc. She always enjoyed it. I also used to buy tripe and pop it in the oven to poach when I was baking something else.
She also ate things like ox hearts (again, done in the oven) and for a treat - buttered crumpets !
She was healthy and happy until her demise at age 15.
She was a staffordshire bull terrier cross.

Crumpets! . You see, in the olden days when I was a child, our dog ate lots of left overs too, and she lived to 16. These days though there seems to be so much debate on what is good and what's not so I'm completely confused about what's best. I want to know I'm feeding my dog something decent.

I am pretty sure the general opinion is that it contains a tiny tiny amount of meat and is padded out with crap other stuff. I feed my dogs Arden Grange but I have greyhounds and a lurcher and if I feed them anything of less quality I suffer with having to pick up runny poo's constantly- not fun!

Hmmm... I think a lot of marketing is done by dog food companies, because they know we want our pets to have a healthy diet, but it's true that dogs were perfectly ok eating left-overs, offal , etc before tinned food was even thought of.
The dog with a shiny coat, bright eyes and er regular habits is a healthy dog, I think.
They also get a much tastier, interesting diet with "our" food as well, - imagine eating the same food, either chunks or loaf every day . I wouldn't like it, so why would they ?
My dog loved veggies, too (as long as they were covered in - butter !)

We use James Wellbeloved - cheapest place we've found it is a site called 'seapets'.
It's supposed to be non-allergy - so basically good quality stuff in it and no padding it out with rubbish. We started our dog on it a year ago because he was starting to not tolerate lots of other dog foods. He has always had table scraps, but we have to be careful what what he has now. He's 12 though, so getting on in years. So far, he has tolerated this food really well.

We also feed our dogs James Wellbeloved as both our dogs (king Charles cavaliers) age 1 get colitis and this food has kept them from suffering too much diarrhea. They also love a bit of scrambled egg for brekkie.

There are so, so many things you could feed. Raw is arguably best for them if you have the freezer space and stomache for it and the cheapest.

JWB is good. Arden Grange is good. As is Orijen, Burns, Wainwrights, Chappie, Natures Menu, Nature Diet etc. etc.

Burns 'high oats' kibble. No wet food. I mix in a bit of bakers small bite. I occasionally let him have bits of chicken,veg etc

Arden Grange or Purina Pro Plan are my Spaniel's favourites and he never has any stomach problems with these.

He has hide bones several times a week and a "real" bone once a week. DH occasionally slips him a bit of real "meat" if we're having some.

James wellbeloved is a bit of a scam, the large breed food doesn't offer anything extra than the normal food, was not impressed and my young basset didn't get on with it. Pets at home sell a range called wainwrights which is better than jwb. But the best food by far is skinners working hypoallergenic food, I feed the duck and rice, has better nutritional value than jwb. It's £20 for a 15kg bag. They do a working hypoallergenic puppy food as well. It's only called working to keep it vat free. Came recommended by top basset breeders, and otterhound people.

Can I be really cheeky and ask if anyone knows if Purina is any good. OH has thus far insisted on Pedigree, dry food, vet keeps telling me NO! So, I'm trying Purina's Dog Chow. This is in Chile so the name may be different, but it's not specialist, I get it in the supermarket. Thanks

Purina is in the same boat as Pedigree, Bakers etc., Pro Plan included.

We give our dog Burns and mix in a little chicken and/or stock. They deliver to your door and have a very helpful nutrition advice line.

Orijen is the best kibble. I have had dogs for years and wish I had started feeding them this from day one. What is important is to find a food that is low in grain and high in protein.
